Qatar to Phase Out A340-600 - Soon!!

Qatar will phase out the A340-600 earlier than planned. It is expected that all 4 aircraft will leave the fleet in 2008.

Not a big surprise...how many "prestige" flight (LHR) have been grounded or downgraded to the 330, because of 340 AOG..lots of problem on this A/C...
This may be one of the reason i guess..

Lets face it, QR never needed the A340-600s.

It was a publicity stunt to be launch customer of the HGW versions, together with being the showcase for the first class lounge!

The A340-600 is a flawed design by Airbus, with complaints from virtually every operator so far!

One thing I wonder about though, the article mentions the setup of Oryx lease company, through which they want to lease out the A340s and older A330s. Who wants to lease an airplane like the A340HGW?

Its costly in every aspect, everytime it lands there is an inherent risk for an incident and you need a routestructure with routes over 12hours in order to make any money with it...

Strange world of aviation...

So what's gonna happen to the A 346 drivers? Leasing company? Aren't all the buses already leased through some strange companies outside Qatar?
Anything happening in Qatar is a mirror reflection of Dubai. Given that fact we should be having more fun aren't we?

All leasing companies are set up by QR....

All management connections lead to one guy...

As does everything else!

Got the feeling that it will be the same for the 380(with only 2 or 3 A/C ordered)...Just a publicity, so Qatar airways can pretend they are one of the first customs of the the 380...Does Qatar airways really need 380...

Flawed it may be, but you can't deny it's a great looking aircraft!

Interesting that the new 77Ws won't (don't) have any F Class section; will this be the same for the -200LR? I thought they'd be able to justify First Class on Heathrow at least, whatever about CDG or HKG.

Any idea of when QR will announce its new routes for 2008?

QR's CEO envisages the retirement and replacement of its existing Airbus A330/A340 fleet as the aircraft reach five or six years of age.

"These aircraft will be transferred to the leasing company being set up called Oryx Leasing, and placed with other carriers," says Al Baker.

The 777s offer greater capacity and speed than the airline's A340-600s, says Al Baker. He says that he will not be adding to four A340-600s that the airline has introduced over the last year and that the 777s will replace them. "I expect the A340s will be some of the first aircraft we will lease out," he says.

The 777s are equipped with a two-class, 42/293 business/economy layout, unlike the similarly sized A340-600s, which accommodate 266 in a first/business/economy configuration, but feature an eight-seat on-board lounge.
