As a regular GRU visitor ( once a month for 7 years ) I'm sorry to hear that some of your colleagues were robbed. Best advice is take a taxi. They are very cheap and the concierge at the hotel will have some trusties to call up. Don't wear that big watch and take some "mugging money" say 75 Real to give up if you are caught out.

Some districts are safer than others but nowhere is completely safe after dark...........

The 75 Riyals of mugging money would add up to nearly half of your 185 riyals (29 hours) layover money. Perhaps you should just own up and say you worked for EK and they would leave you alone!!!

JEEZ!!!

Do not believe in these horror stories!
S.Paulo is not less safe than any other big city in the world. Think about NYC 15 years ago: if you take a chance, depending on time and place, you are a target...
Just take the common sense safety precautions and there'a a lot to do in that city.
Enjoy!

EK crew mugged in Sao Paulo?
There is nothing new. Didn't the company advise to be careful? Go out in groups, dress like the locals, no jewelry, little money for essentials and yes speak to reception for guidelines. Sao Paulo has people from a multitude of backgrounds, races, creeds and enjoy it just like one of them. This is just the beginning. Crews will get acquainted with the spots to stop by for sightseeing and shopping. Go out of the busy city with organised tours.

Totally agree with Fullforward here -Sao Paulo is no different from any big city. In fact its actually a hell of a lot safer than some of our other stops, ...LOS and ABJ for example!!!

The throw away wallet with a few Real and an old expired credit card is a good idea in any big city including SAO. To be honest, your just as likely to get ripped off for the same amount by the taxi driver so use hotel recommended ones, you'll pay less overall!

....oh and don't talk to dodgy looking strangers as Mum used to say

"Heard that two EK Cabin crew have already been mugged in SP? Any truth? "

We all know its unsafe, so if anyone knows the answer to the above question then pls answer it.....
