AKAIK, etislut uses a nifty piece of router software called 'Packet Blocking' which blocks skype... Packet blocking can block any type of content, even if it uses port 80.

And the Mac version still works at my location. As GoreTex said, just change the port number and you are online...

Not had a problem with a different VPN, but it may be caused by the damaged cable in the Med. 7 days this morning says that the cable will not be fixed until next Tuesday.

If anyone wants a decent VPN connection.... Please PM me.

I have a VERY good friend in Europe who is setting up a VPN server. 100MB/sec uplink + 100MB/sec downlink - dedicated 24hrs service.

He charges €7.00 per month.

No fancy advertising, no popups, no extras. Just a very fast VPN.

Etisalat internet.

I think the recent server problem may have been sorted, it seems a bit quicker now.

However, I can't get a certain well know free "warm" VPN to connect. Same for the V()iP I use.

Anyone else having the same problem?

Just pay for a decent VPN already. Why do pilots always have to be such cheapskates and then complain when the company does the same to them.

Hotspot is DESIGNED to fail at times to entice you to sign up for their paid service. How hard is it to understand that there is no free lunch?

I have a paid VPN from a good provider and never had any problems with it for years.

Oh, and the SE-WE-ME cable won't be fixed for another couple of days. The "improvements" you see are probably due to extensive caching. Any "live" content is still excruciatingly slow.

I could log and sign in onto skype but when when the call was made, only silence. However the call seemed to be connected and my credit decreases; my wife confirmed that she answered the calls but she could hear anyone. The skype test function worked OK. How can I claim refund from Skype? Plea for forbearance here, new user of skype and unfortunately did not know that skype is banned in the ME. Thanks

helen-d,

Had the same problems, tried reloading it several times but no joy. Have paid for one now which is a lot more stable and connects instantly. Have survived 2.5 years on the free-be you mentioned, but I think it's finished. This new one doesn't cost much a year, in fact it's pretty cheap really.

When I was out there, it was blocking Computer-to-Phone, but Computer-to-Computer was okay.

I got around it by switching to a different serveice to Skype for Computer-to-Phone (sorry, but I don't have the name of that one on this machine and, if it gets popular then Etiselat and the other phone company will probably block that one too), but note the comments above which may solve the problem.

It's not all the ME that are blocking it - as far as I know only UAE (no problem in Qatar, BAH or KSA).

Good luck!

Hello,

Internet now start to get back to life ..I was almost dead at my place around Friday.
I had been generally encountering problems with internet since they installed the new FTTH system. the old school ADSL was perfect all the time.

Speaking about VPN ,Iam currently searching for a good SSL VPN provider close to UAE ... dont you guys know any?

Regards,,,
