If it was blocked becasue of "security concerns" and now it is unblocked the questions that need to be asked are, did the security concerns go away??????????? OR have they figured out a way to listen to the conversations???????

Skype still down
Hi to all of you who've not given up on getting Skype to work again!
I live in DXB in a non-free/freehold zone and cannot get skype to work without any of the workarounds known to many in this thread but which I will not disclose for the reasons most of us know.
Skype is still not working in SHJ either.
However, I have been experiencing lately something very strange: By using one popular workaround, I can use Skype & make crystal-clear calls one day but over the next few days the "workaround" becomes very unreliable (frequent disconnects) while my firewall detects very frequent attacks on my PC coming from UAE based IP addresses only!!! Could our beloved local telecoms provider be behind it???
Anyone experiencing anything similar to what I described?
Cheers,
D
Been away for a while, came back and it is working fine (living on SZR) without the alternative I was using. However I also am getting VERY frequent firewall attacks. (By fine it is working the same as before it was shut down: calls are fine but no access to accounts page, so still using the proxy for that)!

Thanks
Thanks to those who sent some suggestions to try. So far they've worked, although just today it seems that it has stopped working. Not sure if it's temporary. Anyone else in the same boat?

I am also very happy to say that SKYPE has remained operational, with no interuptions. Jumeirah location, basic Al Shamil. Desktop and Wi Fi connected laptops are perfect. I do keep my fingers crossed!! Hope everyone is able to reconnect via work around atc as soon as possible. Its a life line to the outside world. Good Luck!

... i really don't see ANY problems using SKYPE high above the SZ-Road ..
it works fine since ever !! @ some days those "useless wonnabees at ETISALAT" are trying
to block it - so i've to start up my "B-plan" alias "workaround" - which works just perfect!
I have not had any phone-costs with ETISALAT for any long-distance call since over two years -Scouts honour! those mean monopolist won't see ANY other Dirham from me, than for topping up & re-registering (another mean ripp-Off! ) my pre-paid mobile ...
I've just called my mates in NZ for FREE for over some 1 1/2 hours -
thanks to SKYPE - free phoneline forever

Big full page spread in the Gulf News today (8-10) on page 8 about the blocking of VOIPs in the area. Seems that there is finally an official "answer" to the blocking. Apparently it is a legal matter about communications, blah blah blah. But not to worry mates, Etisalad says they are going to start providing VOIP. An interesting read if you can.

I guess it is a train....
8th October
The UAE's Telecommunications Regulatory Authority has defended its decision to block VoIP services in the country, claiming that the facility should be treated just like conventional mobile and fixed line services and therefore needs licensing, reported Gulf News. A TRA official added that VoIP will soon be barred in any areas still able to access services. Etisalat, which is considering launching its own VoIP service, supported the TRA's policy.
