His Highness Sheikh Maktoum bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, has died in Australia at the age of 62. His successor is General Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai. The official mourning period will last for 40 days, and UAE flags will fly at half mast. Ministries and government organisations will be closed for seven days.

my condolences. nice chap, but .. wasn't that the ruler who let the traffic grow dispropotionately, without proper planning, who let the landlords live their ugly greed unrestrictedly, without any quality control, who let the prices skyrocket, only compensating locals fully, who let entrepreneurs in charge, who barely pay their worker-slaves?

Take away the oil revenue, and it's...back to the desert, Bubba, tea towel and fan belt flapping in the breeze.
Having said this, you do get to smile at your bank book from time to time (in the old days, anyway), so all in all, not so bad.
Ah...except for the fools in EK who believed the recruitment info.
Told 'em so a long time ago, but no one paid attention.
A bitter lesson learned, I'm sure.

Govt offices and schools closed for a week??? is that not a holiday rather than mourning
so the locals will run off to Bahrain or where ever get a nice 7 day break while the xpats will work their butts off

Um? I was under the impression that Dubai's oil revenues were not that big these days; the major income being from tourism and business?
Good to hear the restaurants etc will still be operating at least, with all respect for the late Sheikh, tourists have paid their hard-earned to come and they shouldn't have their holiday wrecked.
As for the "outrush" to BAH, I'm sure it won't be too noticable compared with the Eid "visitors" from a country much nearer

From it's origin it has now become a main tourist/financial/trade area.
EK has become a driving force in the aviation world boosting sales for both Airbus and Boeing. providing many in avaition with a position in this business.
DXB has also kick started other middle east countries in the aviation business
QR & EY are both examples now pushing forward.
My point is who started all this,the Maktoum family with forward thinking.
otherwise the aviation world would be reliant on the far east and africa for the future. Expansion is not a bad thing & please don't bite the hand that feeds.

Dubai realised back in teh early 80s that the only way was to follow the path they did. It´s obvious that in an environment like what Dubai experienced so far ( and continuing...) there will be quite a number of wild middle east cowboys making a quick million AEDs.
However Dubai and its Royal family had the vison and the guts to take the path they did. They probably did more good than bad despite not having the same money the other royals have to the South.
The have the name Dubai and Emirates across the world. There are shortcoming, but the other guys are years behind.
