Yeah, I have some info and advise. STAY where u are in the first world and enjoy your own country. Come to the third world and regret every minute of it. Your interview will be conducted by people who have no backbone and will look you straight in the eye as they tell blatant lies. Dont believe a word they say.
That's my rant. MMMM that feels much better.
Mate, be very very careful particularly if you have a wife and family.

Poison by name, Poison by post.

Toned down, what poison is really trying to say is make a decision that is right for yourself and get as many facts as possible.

Find out what is in your current and the EKcontract, and what is not.

Project worst and best case scenarios in both positions.

Ask people in real life (not here) for valid answers to your questions.

If we scare everyone away, what sort of people will we end up flying with?

I agree with both GN and rat, each to an extent. The only problem with what GN says regarding the EK contract as it exists, is that it changes frequently, and we as employees have no input to the changes. Consequently, the majority (not all) of changes to my contract since I have been here have been for the worse; and unfortunately, the changes are presented as fait accompli, as you have no process of appeal.
Think long and hard about what you have, what you will be leaving, and how long you can tolerate living on the other side of the world, especially coming from one of the world's most liveable cities, to one of the world's less liveable cities. And if you have a wife and kids, be ever so careful.

m-rats

guys can any of you tell me exactly why it would be foolish to come to ek if you have a family. Is the pay peanuts and allowances crap particularly if you have more then three kids?

also do you happen to know if they pay for your travel expenses from the uk to attend interview.

Judge the pay yourself, check out the EK website and then the cost of living. The allowances just about pay for your night away with nothing to bring home and there is no sector pay. If you have more than 3 kids you will have to pay all costs for #4+. As to them paying for you to get to Dubai...beehave!

ALLOWANCES..................someone mention allowances! Please tell me what the £5 allowance is supposed to buy you for breakfast in London. Flight crew might be entitled to a freebie but not the 11-13 Cabin Crew. Only just covers a Mc big breakfast down the road. Is that where the Company expects the crew to eat? Hotel breakfast is around £12. Times that by 5 crews per day and that's some saving. Couldn't imagine that happening in BA ,Quantas.

Yes well, when one has to deal with third world people, third world airline, third world thinking, I guess that all adds upto third world allowances. !!

Bymonek,

A breakfast scandal made worse by the fact that meridien and ek are the same group ,are they not? So a b+b deal wouldnt kill them.

The allowances I was refering to were regarding Heathrow where we stay at the Marriott. LGW allowances cover what's required so aren't an issue and as it happens, the Le Meridien at LGW has now been taken over by the Aurora group anyway.

Hey Rat

Man just leave, better yet send your resume and i will get you job at jetblue. I am sure you have heard about them or seen them in JFK. you will be FO for about 5 years making 51 in hour and top at 95 after 12 years. Than you will upgrade to Captain on E-190 or A320 and make 71 to 115 in hours 75 hours a month 11 days off and pay about 35% tax and be on reserve for about 3 years. you also need a crash pad in JFK which will run you about 400 a month. after all these years you will bring home about 5000 a month if you bust your ass. now let me ask you how much did EK pay your first year. How much was your rent and your crash pad. how much was Tax. And the last Question, In your interview with EK, what did you tell them when they asked you why you want to come to EK and leave your company. You are correct that they are from 3rd world, but they gave you a job and believed in you to be a good employee representing their Company. PS... the offer with JetBlue still stands.

Global, right on the money my firend. Flynhigh, thank you for your thoughts. it seems that rat and few others have lost sight of what's out there.

Rat, it's okay to complain but don't scare others from applying for a good airline. It may not be a perfect place, but where is?

flynhigh is my perfect example about how there are others who will be willing to swap positions with you if you think you are getting treated bad. Enough said..

Oh please lets not get all emotional. Warnings of unscrupulous employers is not illegal YET. One who makes the big move and gripes later can not say they were not warned.

Flynhigh,

Take a leaf out of Southwest and other operators that reward their boys and girls for a job well done. One does not need Widebody and International ops to be successful. I think you need to dust off your CV and reevaluate your choice of employers. Same as I am. All you have in Jetblue, throw all the crap over to the third world Dubai and their Shiney Widebodies and incompetent management and you have Emirates. Same same only different !!!!!!

Hey Rat
Correct me if i am wrong, I thought all of the EK managements where form U.K and Canada are you calling them names and are good for nothing, wow. As far as southwest man you don't know what are you talking about. send your CV to southwest see if they will even call. good luck to you..

Southwest has 400 airplanes on order.
Jet Blue only has 350. JB currently only has 75 or so airplanes. Do the math.

Having to wait 5 years for your command is simply a lie or at the very least you are misinformed! You are probably looking at 12 to 18 months to command and you won't have to interview for that position either.
Having said that it will be on the EMB 170 and that only makes $80 an hour so that sucks!
Southwest in the highest paid narrowbody airline in the states right now and they top out at $200 an hour. That is after 12 years granted but they rarely work more than 14 days a month.
Everyone, and I do mean everyone loves working for those companies because they treat the employees with respect. The pay is not great especially when you start but that respect thing goes a long way. Something that can be learned in the sand but I keep forgetting that I am lucky to have a job or if I don't like anything I should just leave. Great management style! Goes a long way!
