Post New Doha Airport - contracts awarded

From UAE Gulf NEws:

"Contracts worth 2.56 billion Qatari riyals (Dh2.58 billion) have been awarded to several contractors for the construction and infrastructure of the New Doha International Airport Phase I, local media have reported. New Doha International Airport steering committee awarded a 1.798 billion riyal contract to the international joint venture contractor Sinohydro-Gamuda-WCT of China and Malaysia for design detailing, procurement, construction, start-up and commissioning of airfield facilities, including two runways, three full-length parallel taxiways, all airfield lighting and electrical substation equipment.

The contract includes a tunnel providing access to the midfield area and a detention ponds system to manage airfield drainage.

The project is slated for completion by September 2008.

Another contract for 717 million riyals for detailing, procurement, construction, start-up and commissioning of airside and landside roadways was awarded to a local firm, Midmac Contracting.

Labour compound

A 46.4 million riyal job for the labour compound infrastructure was won by another local firm, Al Jaber Engineering.

Qatar Al Attiyah International Group won a 2 million riyal contract for the provision of marine engineering inspections to carry be carried out during the construction of the airport platform.

Meanwhile, Gulf Times quoted Civil Aviation Authority chairman Abdul Aziz Al Nuaimi as saying that US firm Bechtel was awarded a $900 million (Dh3.31 billion) contract for phase two of the airport.

"We have decided to award the project to US firm Bechtel, which is currently implementing the $2.8 billion Phase I of the new airport. The engineering, procurement and construction contract with Bechtel for Phase II will be signed within a few days," the official told the daily.

Al Nuaimi said phase two would be completed by March 2009 and the new terminal will have the capacity to handle 12 million passengers annually."
