Question Why did you go to the sandbox

Just a penny...

Just curiosity, why do so many move there nowdays? Give a mainreason-is it or was it money, better way of life, faster upgrade time(used to be I quess), newer airplanes, better and bigger companies or because of unemployment at the time or was it all that.

How many generally are planning to retire there from companies mainly like Emirates, Gatar and Gulf Air, or are people just waiting to get some time in a proper equipment and head back to their homecountries looking for a retirement job or what?

Come on why did you go?

All the reasons as stated in your first paragraph were the reasons I was dead keen on Emirates and the Middle East.

I don't believe any of those factors are valid today though, so I don't know why anyone would want to go there. I certainly am not interested any more. Morale is dropping over there at a frightening rate. That's a good enough indicator in my humble opinion.

Asia is where it's kicking off now...

Yes its all about the cash and if your not at Emirates, all the reasons in your first para are still current too.
I personally feel you can have a beeter way of life here, due to lower cost of living than you can in Europe, yes its hot and the landscape is dull, but if you make the most of your time here you can enjoy it.

Someone forgot to mention family life.
My last company I was away for up to 3 months at a time, then only 10 days or so at home with no pay, then back for another 3 months.
Now as long as the fanatics keep away I have really good quality time with my wife and daughter.
My days off are with pay now.

I actually agree with Big Bus Boy, but also its global situation in the aviation world. There are only two places in the world where development in the aviation takes place and those are: Far East and Middle East. Middle East because they simply have oil and gas that they convert in money and reinvest in transportation, without which the country and the region as such just cant develop. (They seem to understand it, but not only to understand but to succeed in doing so) In 50 years there will be probably alternate energy source and oil is also gone in most countries in Middle East besides Saudi Arabia. That’s why they stress so much on development aviation; it’s the key for the future development. Simply look what’s going on with Etihad simply bout aircrafts for 7, 1 billions. Qatar signed a deal for 5, 1 billions.
This offers you stability for the next 50 years; I think its very rear to find it in those days. Look what’s going on in Europe: the conditions are getting even worse and people have to work more for less money and pay more taxes. The whole democracy can’t help and will end up in government saying there is no money for your pension, sorry.
Far East because it’s just coming economy and as the economy grows so does the aviation. The consequences are the same.

Ah, yes Fox, that's one particular Cyclone that every pilot I know manouvres to make sure that he HITS it, and not avoid.

Cyclone Nightclub - I was there a couple of nights ago actually - thought I was in Beijing for the most part.

Seriously though, the Sandbox is largely a safe place with minimal crime. That's what does it for me.

Pilots' motives for making lifestyle decisions.

Regardless of experience, self-gratification (to the exclusion of everyone else), and self-percieved aggrandizement ALWAYS remain the overruling drivers for pilots.

0 - 10,000 hours pilots make their decisions SOLELY on the ensuing, regardless of location:-
Newer/Newest;
Faster/Fastest;
Bigger/Biggest;
Best Looking

....when searching for employment, watches, and women (in the case of women, "bigger" refers to bustline, lips, and sexual appetite!)

10,000 + hours pilots often find themselves in a quandry when
$$$$'s are factored in to the equation.
...they realise that by choosing the biggest, fastest, newest rather than SSS's, they might LOOK good while they're at work, but LOOKING good doesn't pay the bills, buy that investment property or put money in the bank!!

Cool

May end up sticking around the region a bit longer on my own, once I've demob'ed (on my second tour of duty here in Iraq).

To address your remark about the local women, Snowyman, it's all a matter of who you are and what you're looking for.

I married one.
