Doha: The paid parking at the Doha International Airport is in its last stage of finishing and is slated to start operations by next April albeit with a six weeks delay, Qatar Airways CEO, Akbar al-Baker said yesterday.

He said the short-term parking lot has already been completed, but it will not be before the next two to three weeks that the long-term parking space would also be finished.

The charges levied on vehicles using the parking space has been fixed at four Qatari Riyals on hourly basis for the short-term and the charge will increase with duration, but the additional amount is yet to be specified. As for the long-term parking, users will be able to park their cars for days at distinct rates.

Work on the car park facilities has been undertaken last year as part of the renovation and expansion of the airport terminal facilities.

Al Baker said the parking area is a fully owned subsidiary of the airport and Qatar Airways will be operating it on its own, but the airline is evaluating whether other companies might join in. A decision to this effect is to be made soon, he said.

He said although initially the charges will be paid in cash, at a later stage a system would be introduced, where credit cards could also be used.

The whole parking area will accommodate 1,200 vehicles with separate space allocated for limousines and buses that are used to transport crew and passengers.

Meanwhile, Al Baker also said the ground-breaking for the multi-billion new state-of-the- art airport will take place also sometime next month, without specifying the exact date. He said the site preparation will be a long process that would take six months to complete.

The 2,200-hectare new airport site is to the east of the existing Doha International Airport. It will be developed in three stages with the final commissioning slated for 2015.
