EK Staff Travel For Other Airlines

I know it's a bit of a rude question, but if you don't ask........

Are Emirates a good bunch for upgrading other airline staff when travelling on staff travel concessions (ID90-type things)? Maybe I shouldn't mention specific airlines, but a certain UK airline that sounds like Smitish Bareways might be the carrier to DXB!

My vested interest is an upcoming DXB-PER flight and somehow the prospect of, gusting, 11 hours in Econ isn't filling me with joy. No, not snobbery, just a severe lack of sleep. I know a bunch of EK guys from the forces, Air 2K etc but have lost touch and can't contact them directly, or I wouldn't bother you lovely people.

And as a PS, is there any wa I can get a good idea of the loads. I talked to EK reservations people and they were reasonably friendly. I can understand 100% the reasons for not wanting to give away commercially sensitive info regarding seat factors, but 'it's looking alright at the moment' really doesn't appease the Dragon

Cheers Peeps.

Honestly, I don't like your chances. The main problem is that Business class is always full. We've been buying ID 90 "J" class tickets and still have been upgraded less than 50% of the time.

Just checked the loads for an upcoming trip, and again, a few seats in "Y", but "J" is full.

Also, seeing as you have the ability to buy ID90 Y or J, you'd be unlikely to upgraded on a Y based ticket.

Sorry man, but hey, at least you get movies in Y class...

EK Concessions

For the rest of us in the Aviation Community there aint none....however EK can be proud to be the only carrier in this region that doesn't do anything for the people that have helped them get to where they are now.

Different Experience for different people and I understand that.

however,in two occations I was upgraded to B/C on EK. needless to say, always priority given to EK staff on seniority. but I was lucky to be upgraded to B/C.

Its not the food that matters, but the seat isnt it?

I would hate to throw rain on your parade bang, and I appreciate that you had a good experience, but the reality is that we cannot even upgrade one of our F/O's (who is positioning in J class) without risking the wrath of management. So as other airline staff, you have about as much chance of winning the lottery as getting an upgrade (much to my disgust).

One of the real ironies of our situation (and to the eternal credit of those crews who offered the hospitality), many of our drivers have been given jump seat travel with other airlines when it was widely known (pre 9/11) that the favour would not be returned on EK.,

Having said all that, it never hurts to ask.

Cheers

Guys,

Thanks for your replies. So I guess the chances aren't too good.

Bus Canuck,

We're not able to buy the ID90 J tickets you suggested or I would. Some Interline deal that I am definitley no expert on but I do know all that's on offer is ID90 Y and fingers crossed.

Bang,

Absolutely spot on. I really don't care about the food nor the booze, it's just trying to get a bit of shut-eye on a long flight.

DMF,

Yep, I'll definitley ask and smile sweetly (so long as it's not a male check in staff member). The whole upgrade thing is always a can of worms. It never fails to amuse me to see QF staff trying to get on BA flights because they know BA will upgarde where QF don't. I always try and ensure airline staff are looked after on my flights but I know it isn't reciprocated in good deal of airlines. I just hope EK is as good as it looked when I went for the interview (and, just in case anyone thinks anything less, yes, I did get offered the position but chose to stay in the UK and have absolutely nothing but good things to say about the airline).

I travelled EK twice on an ID00 from KHI-DXB-JIA in Business and on KHI-DXB-IST was upgraded to First Class.
