Class 1 validity

I took my initial Class 1 in August 2001 and passed but have had my pilot plans on hold since then due to Sept 11th and the downturn in the industry.

I didn't take a renewal in Aug 2002 because at the time I wasn't flying but am now considering starting training. The CAA Medical Center informed me that as long as I didn't leave it a 'silly' amount of time I wouldn't have to do another initial

Should I do the £100 renewal now or wait until nearer Aug 2003 when I have to have a more thorough MOT (I will be 34 by then).

Thanks,
