Initial Class 1 Defferal
Hi everyone,
I’ve been flying for about six years on a Class 2 medical and have amblyopia in my right eye.
When I first got my Class 2, I had an RXO limitation, but that was removed after two years because I’m well adapted and my vision has been stable, confirmed by consultant reports.
My ambition has always been to go commercial, so my AME encouraged me to apply for a Class 1 even though I’m technically “monocular.”
During my Class 1 assessment, the doctor said my case would have to be referred to the CAA for a final decision. I was told that if this was a renewal, it wouldn’t be a problem—but because it’s an initial, it’s more complicated.
It sounds like they can’t issue an OML on an initial at the moment (although this is under consultation).
Has anyone here had experience with appealing to the CAA in a situation like this? What are my chances or is it futile given they won’t be able to give me an OML?
I’ve been told by some people to try other ICAO states, but that’s not really practical for me, and I don’t see how the risk assessment changes when the condition is the same regardless of the country.
I’ve got hundreds of hours in GA and instructing without a single issue related to my vision.
Any advice, stories, or insight would be hugely appreciated.
