ATPL Training with Class 2 medical

Hello, I am currently starting my ATPL training in Ireland. I have an expired class 1 medical (so I am sure I can get it renewed with no problem) and still a current class 2 medical. Am I ok to continue ATPL training on class 2 medical as long as I renew it and have my class 1 medical for my CPL test?
I was told this was ok but just want a second opinion to be sure.
