The deadly consequences of missing sleep.

I posted the part below on R & N but if fizzled away quickly. I can only conclude they didn't read the book.

What I would like is for some of our medical professionals to read the book. Why we Sleep. They will not find it a heavy task as they will not be board - quite the opposite. Just me hollerin' about some book will end up with it vaporising again, but if several professionals make positive comment then perhaps it could stay as Sticky.

I'll ask the mods there if we can have a link to this topic on the medical section. Yes, I think it is that important. - because, the research implies that if we were able to change our sleeping habits, we'd empty hospitals and reduce accidents by an order of magnitude. Mostly car accident, but some aviation 'Hull Losses' - a term the author picked up on.

I've just added to my post which was copied to Quora, the science forum on which I pontificate mostly about astrophysics. That is my main love but when I started this, a book my professor son purchased for me, I was lost in minutes in the workings, and indeed the malfunctioning, of the human brain and also the body.

My apologies, this is detritus from a copy from Quora, the science site. I'll leave this here so that my retraction later makes sense.

I posted this on the professional pilot’s rumour network . . . I am continuing to read on, and continuing to be beyond astonished at Dr Walker’s book. In fact, of all the books I’ve ever read this has left me with a sense of ‘Why the **** doesn’t the world know about this?’ One thing is for sure: they will.

If you are a student, or a pilot, or a keen young executive, you might want to invest a chunk of time and more than a few $$ on absorbing every single word Dr Walker has to say on the subject.

The studdies are vast, and the kit researchers have now really get an inside look at the pathways in the brain - as they reveal themselves in REM and NREM sleep.

I had not realised just how vital NREM sleep was since there has been years of comments bout REM sleep but not a lot published about NREM sleep.

MY ORIGINAL POST TO AIRCREW: (I later read his comment about Maggie Thatcher and Ronald Regan - Dr Walker said, Perhaps President Trump might take note.) The original heading.

There is not a pilot in the world that doesn't need to read this book.

Or driver, or . . . there is no one really, that should not be aware.

These days it's uncommon for me to get overexcited about scientific findings, but when my son caused this to land on my mat at Christmas I thought, yeh, that should get me to sleep.

Matthew Walker's, Why We Sleep is an . . . eye opener. Far from being soporific in its own right, the book had me on the edge of my chair turning pages in disbelief. Oh sure, I knew some of the science but this world authority takes us into realms that are gut-wrenchingly familiar to pilots and then out the other side into a surreal land.

There are so many 'I need to post this' statements that frankly I'd post a quarter of the book, but the studies that reveal an exponential rise in danger with reduced sleep are nothing short of alarming.

This is serious science but nonetheless often difficult to believe - but believe it we should; the reader will be left in no doubt about the credentials of the scientists and universities involved in the decades long research.

With an aviation connection, there is an amusing section about David Dinges and Dr Mark Rosekind. It seems they suggested names like 'prophylactic naps' to the FAA but it was deemed ripe for snide jokes. It was the latter that put forward the term, 'Power Nap'. Quote: More fitting with leadership and dominance based job-positions. Unquote. One thing is for sure, those gentlemen certainly got the FAA's attention back then.

Some of the stories are heartbreaking. Some, in particular the big name drug companies who make bewildering profits from sleeping tablets, are a description of a cancer in the side of humanity. When I say bewildering, I mean reading, and rereading, and rereading the lines describing their profits . . . and the number of people who die as the result of not being fit to drive the morning after their use.

The number of people that die in north America due to tiredness exceeds both intoxication and drug use combined. Need I go on?

There is one immutable fact drawn from this WHO-backed research. Humans need 7-9 hours sleep to avoid not only immediate danger but also a slew of serious long term health effects. The chances of you being one of the people that only need ~6 hours is less than your chances of being struck by lightning. And I don't mean the airframe we're in. Maggie Thatcher was of course a different species.

I've asked mods to give a link from R & N to this medical section with perhaps a one line Sticky for a while. As mentioned, I'd appreciate considered opinion about this book as such wide-spectrum, decades-long research programs seem to be largely ignored and I'm not sure if I'm overreacting due to my lifelong interest in brain function.

Matthew Walker does in fact go on to mention Maggie, and indeed Ronald Regan. He suggests the incumbent president should also be made aware as he too boasts of short nights.

I guess I'll rest my case now, but when I read a new gem like micro-sleeps being far more dangerous than drunk driving, I won't promise.

Just downloaded the book The Perfect Code from Amazon Prime. I'll let you know what I think of it in a few days time.

Was just a bit of detritus left from a copy of a post on Quora, a science forum which I burden with my thoughts on astrophysics. Someone asked a question on sleep and of course I didn't miss a beat.

The book is Why We Sleep by Matthew Walker. ISBN 978-0-241-26906-0

I'll head back and get rid of those lines. But the irony: the protagonist in my book hardly ever needs to sleep - but then, like Maggy, he's not human.

It's a great book. I was astounded by some of his insights. But is this the right forum?
Anyway, I'm off to bed now.
