All ok now for the past week. It was bloody tofu!
I'd been eating the stuff for years thinking it was beneficial - but it isn't. In my case it eventually became an irritation trigger which caused all that raucus coughing. As mentioned before I'd earlier temporarily changed diet here and there for a few days but it wasn't sufficient time to remove the effects. For me a minimum of a month without it was needed before the coughing stopped. The doc advised me to eliminate pure tofu completely from my diet and pointed to the fact that using soy as a substitute for dairy is not the way to go in the longer term, which is what I'd been doing for many years.
Thanks for all your advice everyone. It was great to finally find out the cause!

Re the post from Jim R.
I was on a mild dose of a particular type of Ace Inhibitors for a short while & had a noticiable & annoying constant cough throughout. Went back to Doc three or so months later, Ace inhibitors changed, cough stopped at once.
Glad the cause was found & things are much better for our colleague in this thread.

so happy to hear the good news! tofu! I have learned the lesson that some good ideas don' t pass muster in the long run.
but thanks to your cough, I learned something.
good luck to you. I've had a bad cough and now understand why! I only coughed in one room of the house. And that room always had an open window, near a source of pollen.
close the window, no cough. YEARS before I figured it out!
good luck ...oh and watch out for monosodium glutamate too!

If you can read this skyhigh I'm sorry to see you got the bullet.
Thanks for your kind words. I haven't raucously barked at the moon since stopping tofu and soy and feel much better for it!
Oh and the mono glute has been off my menu for many a year now.
