Class 1 Renewal

Hi guys
Quick question for you all: I passed the initial class 1 (CAA) last year before starting flight training (on the advice of PPruNe ) and won't be needing full Class 1 privileges again for a few years.

I see on my certificate the included Class 2 medical is valid for 5 years. If I don't renew my Class 1 this year and "downgrade" to Class 2 can I simply do a Class 1 renewal in 3/4 years time to return to Class 1 standards?

That is what I have done and been told by 3 AMEs - ie as long as the certificate is current for any class it is current and can be renewed even if some but not all privileges have expired
