Post skin cancer

after flying many years in the Southern Hemisphere I have devloped skin cancer from being in both the right hand and left side of the A/C. Both arms are affected. I would suggest anybody flying in this region use a good nbr 30 cream ALL the time...

Cool

I have been wearing a blockout every day for about 20 years. Every time I go outside whether to work or play = sunblock. A small price to pay to prevent sunburn and cancer.

Unhappy

The southern hemisphere sun burns and it can burn fast!

An ounce of prevention is worth the proverbial pound of cure. I always wear long-sleeve shirts and long trousers, a wide-brimmed hat and Zeiss sunglasses when I have to go out in the Aussie sun, ditto any other country with bright sunlight.

When examined for skin cancer all the doctor could find were a few solar keratoses on the backs of my hands. The keratoses were promptly removed with a few puffs from a liquid nitrogen "gun"

Had I realised my hands were so vulnerable I would have worn golf gloves for driving, flying etc. (I do now although the damage is partly done already.)

I urge all pilots who spend long hours in the cockpit with sunlight blazing in to use the best blockout cream they can find or (if their company uniform allows it) long-sleeve shirts. Don't neglect a good pair of sunglasses either. Golf gloves are handy, they leave plenty of feel for the finger-tips and breathe well. I know of a few commercial pilots who use them.
