Unhappy PHI?

I have had a PHI for a couple of years now. I am wondering if anyone has had any experience of claiming on one.

In theory they are very good, especially since they pay a salary when you can no longer work - i.e. you don't have to lose your licence.
However, I am a little curious as to whether or not I would have a fight on my hands to get any money off them.
I am 35 years old and that would mean them having to pay me £2600 per month (tax free)until I am 55 (and index linked). In other words a lot of money (Over a million quid if you include inflation rates based on average RPI).
Would they make me retrain for another job?
Are they likely to delve through medical records and find a really obscure excuse not to pay out?
So the main question is - Am I wasting my £48 per month?
Any experience of these policies out there???????
I am not about to become ill, or medically grounded but just evaluating my options - any input most welcome.

Carry on like you do in the Hyatt and you'll need the insurance!
