Irish flyer you can get your class 1 initial medical done in the mater hospital, however it will be an IAA class 1 med but you can have this converted to a caa class 1 med if you wish for a small fee.just give them a bell and they will fill you in. I hold a caa class 1 med by this method without having to go near gatwick.

The above is not correct, I have just been through the mill with all this medical bull****.
I had my Class 1 medical in the Mater a few weeks ago. I got the cert., a weeks ago. It's a JAA Class 1. Since Ireland are a full member of the JAR since December. There's no such thing as an IAA medical anymore. We are JAR compliant.
It is true you can get a conversion to a CAA medical on the basis of your results taken in the Mater. The mater send off your results to the CAA for £22STG.
Now why would you need a CAA conversion? One instance is BAe in Jerez Spain, claim that they need a CAA medical, because the medical must be carried out in the country in which the lisence is to be issued.
It's all a bloddy mess thanks to pen pushers and desk jockys. <img src="mad.gif" border="0">

My apoligies Irish flyer, eidw is right it has changed now to jaa,but i received my medical when it was then classified as a IAA class 1 med, but no less the medical I hold now is a caa class 1 med at the price of a renewal. In relation to bae's exceptance of it because it was not issued in gatwick well there is conflicting stories. On this bulletin board it was mentioned of an irish cadet having to fly up to gatwick from jerez to sort this out for whatever reason, On the other hand I have been assured by my caa ame who also is of acquaintance to the ame that travels to jerez for medicals that there would be no problem on this issue. I will have to follow up on this with bae as I intend to start within the year and I have no intention on travelling to gatwick for something I already hold. . .Just when you think your ahead !!!!!!!!!!

Friday, it's the same for me. I intend heading for jerez as soon as possible and intend booking my medical tomorrow (Monday). However, I still don't know if a medical in Dublin will suffice for the college and their rules.

My airline got me a Dutch JAA medical to go with my Irish JAA licence (which comes with a German JAA RT licence), on which I hold a Czech JAA type rating, for which I did the training in JAA member Greece. - Notice the JAA in all this? All the above mentioned countries have apparently no problem with this procedure.
The CAA (UK) would accept any JAR medical, they confirmed, airlines generally don't seem to care.
But make sure that you call the appropriate CAA before you undertake any of this. - Your CAA may want to hold the full medical report, as in my case.

Irishpilot,
I believe that there is a difference between an "initial Class 1" and a renewal.
I recently had my renewal done by a CAA qualified ME in Saudi Arabia, he in turn submitted it to the UK CAA and then the IAA.
Totally different to an initial......
