ATPL and class 2 for private use

dear med brains,

My class 1 lapsed last Sep but is still valid for class 2 purposes till Sep this year. Can I legally fly for private purposes only on a ATPL with a class 2 med?

Sure, why not? as long as it's only private operation. But I'm just wondering why your class 2 is only till september of this year valid. If you had your class1 issued 1 year ago, don't you automatically get a class 2 wich is valid for 5 years?

I didnt know that a class 2 lasted 5 yrs. I think I had better consult the CAA for a definitive.
