Question Long distance eyes?

Just a small question which I hope could be answered here, I can see a flea on a dogs back at 500 paces( you get the idea) but at less than arms length I have the need of slight lens help, I have tried graduated varifocals and non graduated with half lens fitted, but I am still brassed of at having to take my specs with me when flying, for I only need them to read one instrument and that is the tech log timer, when talking to my local optician he seems not to understand my plight , anybody any suggestions?
