You may have already heard about this one -
www.open.gov.uk/aaib/dec99htm/bga3705.htm - but it does make sobering reading. In 1999 a K21 glider from the London Gliding Club, Dunstable was destroyed by lightning mid-flight. Both pilots parachuted to safety.
