"Extra-moist" Contact Lenses
Any lens wearing pilots out there that have tried the extra-moist lens ranges (1 Day Acuvue Moist, Dailies Aquacomfort Plus, etc)? Do you find they stop the drying and discomfort? Or are they just a gimmick...
Thanks,

I'm not a pilot but I think I've tried enough contact lenses to give an educated answer to your question (working with an optometrist who is a contact lens specialist does help).
Personally I think the Focus Dailies Aqua Comfort / Acuvue Moist is more of a gimmick then giving me a better time with CLs. My eyes dry up at night and sometimes I have difficulty blinking with my CLs, which is the same with the non-moist counterparts.
Obviously it'll depend on what type of eyes you have - I've had patients come back and say they love the moist CLs so much, they don't mind paying an extra few dollars for the moist version. Then there are ones who absolutely detest the moist CLs, and specifically request for the non-moist ones.
However, rumour has it that Johnson & Johnson will phase out the non-moist 1 Day Acuvue CLs w.e.f. end of this year, and Ciba Vision with the non-moist Focus Dailies in the near future. I wonder how those non-moist CL loving patients will cope. Even though I said moist CLs haven't changed my life substantially, I'm not fussed either way, moist or otherwise.
But I guess the uber-dry environment in the aircraft would dry your eyes out anyway, so it might pay to have those little tear drop packets that you can carry onboard safely i.e. Bion Tears or the like (the brand names elude me).
Hope this helps.

EV, I would say the moist/hydro contact lenses are definately a gimmeck. I always wear contacts for flying and for most of the time when I'm not. I have found being constantly in air conditioned places has the same effect on all the contact lenses I've tried. My advice, find one that works and stick with it. I still use the same basic daily disposables I set off with years ago and they work fine for 95% of the time, even when the eyes are really tired.

I really do agree that every person is different. I have a friend with the same dry eye symptoms and she gets away the moist contact lenses. But when the same thing happened to a relative, it didnot work for him. So its definitely person to person.
You should also try getting a prescription and some advice from a proper doctor of course, just to be safe.

I wear Focus Dailies but have tried the extra moisture ones - they are just the same but I was told you could wear them longer - only meant to wear dailies for 8hrs a day max.
I find, for dry eyes, drops are the best thing. Keeps 'em moist for an extra hr or so. One of the best drops I've found aren't drops but contact lens solution - give it a go see if it helps.
