Doxycycline

Hey guys,
I was prescribed doxycycline a while ago as a pill I could take daily to combat acne, by a doctor.
Now what i'm asking, (Bearing in mind i haven't touched the pills since I started flying, due to possible side effects) is, would it be safe to take the pills while being a pilot/doing training etc.?

The only side effect i've been told is that skin is more sensitive to light.

Thanks!

I suggest you discuss this with CASA, or at least a DAME.

It's frowned upon to give advice regarding specific treatments, for obvious reasons.

You should, of course, contact the relevant aviation medical authority.

I would be very surprised if this drug would cause an issue, its frequently used as a safer alternative for malaria prophylaxis.

Without wanting to give specific advice etc.. I have CAA Class I with doxycycline (and then changed to lymecycline) .. all of that family are fine I was told - as usual what they really care about is what the condition being treated is.

I concur, Malarone being the other "pilot friendly" anti malria drug.

Yes apologies, safer than larium (mefloquine), although I have heard of some pilots do use this.

I have spent months on Doxy (100mg daily) as an anti-malarial. It is a drug recommended for pilots and divers in drug resistant malarial zones.

I realise you are probably not taking the Doxy for anti-malarial purposes but I have also spent a few months on Larium/Mefloquine (when not flying) and can see why pilots should not take it! Everyone I know who was taking Larium suffered side affects to a greater or lesser degree but which were cumulative over time. The side affects were exciting but surreal nightmares/dreams, sleeping badly, behaving in a paranoid and frankly mad way and having very poor memory. I do not plan to ever take it again.

The photosensitivity with Doxy does not prevent you getting a tan but you will burn more easily - so be careful (a bit like being a Scot!).

Pelikanpete: well, then i've got twice the risk!

I am a Scot too! (only lived there for 6 weeks as a baby)

Well, I was just checking, thanks
