UK Class 1 Medical Issues
Ppruners,
I am 18 years of age, 5ft 11" and I weigh 14 stone. I realise that I am overweight for my height and could stand to lose a stone or a stone and a half before reaching my ideal weight. What I would like to know is, is this a problem if looking to do my class 1 medical examination. I do not class my self as un-fit, just a bit overweight. Is it reccomended that I lose weight before going in for my Class 1?
How do the CAA test candidate fitness levels?
Regards,

no major worry . . . . . .
Most measurements nowadays are metric, as it makes calculation of the BMI (Body Mass Index) easier. 5' 11" = 180 cm and 14 st =
88 kg. On these figures BMI = 27.16, which is regarded as "over ideal" ( ideal BMI = 20-25), but not "obese" (BMI over 30 ).
The most comment you could expect at a JAR class 1 medical would be "try not to let your weight creep up any more".

Don't worry about it. Provided you meet the specs in the CAA docs they do not care. They do weigh you and might make the comment, as in my case "some heavy things in your pocket".
They are worried about direct issues such as Blood Pressure, Lung Capacity, Heart Function etc. If those are ok - so are you.
They are not a bad bunch and the C1 initial is not as bad as you think.
You will also meet a few other "nervous" like minded people on the day - so enjoy it and do some networking at the same time.

Five eleven and fourteen stone - you'll need to put on a bit of weight to make a decent front row forward ! Don't worry about, I've flown with fat ones, thin ones, pilots with one eye (really !) - just keep off booze, fags and drugs and you'll breeze it.

Thanks for your replies guys! Made me feel quite a bit better. I will try and lose a tad though and become more fit, just to make sure I'm up to the standard.
Thanks once again

Ah yes the caustic AME comments...
"could do with losing a stone....." said the fat little sod.
Technically, if your waist is slim, you may not even be overweight.
