I know of people who've sustained injury to the eardrum from it...
It's total bunkum - any positive effects are due to placebo, in a similar manner to homeopathy etc.
Don't do it

The link above took about 5 seconds to find via Google. You could also try a search at James Randi's forum if this link isn't enough (Randi's forum has some members that specialise in exposing 'alternative' therapies).
Ear candling is dangerous, fraudulent and illegal in Canada

Thanks for that.So far I have only read and heard negative things about it which is why I was asking if anybody had anything positive to say.Chances are few will have by what I have discovered so far!!!. Thanks for posting that.
Ear wax (cerumen) is a natural protective and antibacterial for the delicate lining of the outer ear canal. It does cause a few problems when it blocks the canal, or rests against the ear drum.
I used to love syringing ears- it was one of the few times I could cure a patient! However, due to a few problems with burst ear drums, the procedure is mostly frowned upon now.
Patience, and the insertion of regular softeners is probably the best way forward. (Olive oil seems to work well).
Get your quack to check out your ears, to exclude other causes for your symptoms. And never ever put anything in your ear smaller than your elbow
The pathophysiology of candles do not appear to make sense, and I'd be a little apprehensive exposing such a delicate mechanism to anything other than a gentle softener.

Thanks gingernut. My GP and Avdoc have agreed I have nothing more sinister than the usual build up, They have both said a good old flush out is now not the normal practice and as you rightfully say their suggestions also are for softening and a whole load of patience whilst the grot departs. Hopi candles have been suggested but my common sense tells me to do my homework first. The homework seems nearly done !!!!!!

A little tip: if you are using one of those agents which soften and / or dissolve ear wax by being left in the ear overnight use some vaseline on the inner part (ie to the bit fitting JUST inside the ear) of the plug of cotton wool you are using to stop it all running out over your pillow. The vaseline will help the solution being absorbed by the cotton wool leaving more available to dissolve the wax.
