Class 1 - lapsed

Is there a limit to the time a class 1 (JAA) can be renewed after it's expiry date, before having to have an initial again?

I think its 5 years.

It is 5 years although the medical won't be renewed it will be revalidated. In reality there is no difference that I am aware of.
