AE, can you imagine long lines of Air France and Iberia cadets in Gatwick?
Of course Gatwick is not the only place worldwide for an initial JAR class 1.
PRG is one of many options, just search on this site. An initial shuld cost you not more than GBP100 in many states.
Any medical can be transferred into the UK one for a small fee.

Yes, I stand corrected.
If you want to convert your non CAA JAR class 1 to a CAA one then you might find this link usueful for the flowchart algorithm explaining the process.

I'd be interested to learn how much money could be saved by going elsewhere for your initial after factoring in the flights and the conversion fee etc.
