Unfortunalty it seems that your view is not suitable for class one
according to CASA/ICAO Requirement the maxium correction is -3.0 per eye...
I suggest to try to take a chirurgiacl operation who allow you to improve your visus to at least -3.0 as correction
Good Luck

Just to correct Aussie_Pilot.... CASA does not have an upper limit of -3, they approve any correction (within reason) providing near 20/20 can be attained with corrective lenses.
fhchiang, it appears you have failed because of astigmatism but I am not aware of the rules for that, you should probably contact CASA Medical department in Canberra for clarification.

abnormality?
the opthalmologist didn't even bother to explain..
he just tell me..
Your are a high myope with astigmastism(he said astigmatism is the mian reason) ..
which is a NO NO....i felt like as if he didn't want me to make the cut..
i emailed CASA... no reply until today.. i emailed them 2 weeks ago
i CHECKED CASA's handbook for AME again and again.... and i couldn't find any limits... but they also didn't mention anything on astigmatism
for your information... For my MALAYSIA DCA CLASS-1
all my eye functions including the media is marked as NORMAL.

You are correct that there is no set limit on refractive error. Your initial post said that the media was Abnormal in both eyes, so that's what I was commenting on. You really need to ring the CASA medical department and discuss it with one of the docs there.

i'm just surprised....
Opthalmologist >>> media abnormal (is he a fluke??? but he is CASA DAO)
Aviation Physician(Malaysia Class-1-initial-valid till january 2007) >>>>> normal media
hmm...
well.. it wouldn't be wise for me to ring up CASA. i'm from Malaysia. it'll cost me a fortune if the conversation gets very long...
i hope someone in pprune who has a refractive error similar to mine and holds an Australian Class-1 could come and clarify...
because there is CERTAINLY no diopter Limit..
and i believe UKCAA allows +/- 5D sphere +/- 2D cylinder (both of which i'm well within)
and guess what.. the Opthalmologist said i won't Qualify for UK CAA either??!!! he is a Designated Aviation Opthalmologist by CASA.
all he said was the correction needed.. no mention of media at all!!

Why don't you seek a second opinion if you do not trust DAO's opinion?

well.. unfortunately...
there's only one DAO in Malaysia..
in CASA's website, there's 2 listed.... but only one is active....
no chance for second opinion...
anyway... what is media abnormalities??

It doesn't have to be a DAO to tell you if there is indeed a media abnormality or not and to re-check your visual acuity.
Media abnormality: abnormality in a bit (or bits) of eye, like cornea, lens, vitreous

ok.. VERY VERY FUNNY THING HAPPENING HERE
CASA AVMED
No limit on correction
6/9 each eye
6/6 binocular
CASA Singapore DAO , Dr Khoo
no limit on correction
6/9 each eye
6/6 binocular
CASA Malaysia DAO, Dr Pall Singh & Dr. George Thomas
+/-5D correction limit (Sph and Cyl taken into calculation)
can anyone explain why CASA Malaysia DAO set their own rules? or they were simply just Ignorant?
I believe UK CAA is the strictest when it comes to eyesight..
even then, i'm fit for UK CAA
but the Malaysia CASA DAO fail me for Australian Class-1 on the Basis of Over-The- CORRECTION LIMIT( IS THERE ANY????)

If you think that there was a mistake made in DAO's application of rules/standards, contact the DAOs concerned and/or CASA, in writing, and seek clarification of your situation and get the report in writing.
If the grounds for failure was purely based on an erroneous belief of limits, then I'm sure something can be sorted.

yes...
i'm very sure ..
the DAO failed me..
he told me i am over the limit
+/- 5D (sph and cyl taken into calculation)
at that time i was like.. ???? i tried to explain to him... lol..
guess what the DAO told me..
look for someone who will PASS you and prove me wrong...
Seriously..l he did not mention anything on the media abnormalities and he doesn't seem to be bothered about it.. all he cares is the +/-5D limit of correction..
and Two DAO doctors in Malaysia Dr Pall and Dr George said the samething.
but.. the DAO's in Singapore and CASA avmed section said no limit.
non normal... you suggest i write to CASA regarding the Malaysian DAOs?

Even if DAOs are based in Malaysia, if it is CASA (Australia) medical that you failed, then you could write to CASA about it. In doing so, don't take an accusatory tone - just politely say that you were advised of your failure on the basis of exceeding the correction limit, and wish to check that it was indeed the case because you understood that there was no limit, and so you are a little confused about it. You could copy your letter to the DAO who failed you.
P.S. As I remember it, -5.0 limit taking into account the astigmatism is the UK CAA initial class 1 limit (I might be wrong, don't quote me on this), so maybe they got confused between the UK CAA and Australian CASA limits. Pretty easy thing to do.

That sounds like a valid reason to what might have happened here Non Normal. The initial UK JAR medical has to be done by the CAA themselves and limit is indeed -5. The renewal limit for a UK JAR medical is -8/+5, so if anything this figure should be the one which would spring to mind for the Doc concerned one would imagine...
