I am now going to send some more documentation to the CAA and keep my fingers crossed and see what happens... they do sound like a nice lot and try all they can to actually help you reach your goal. I really appreciate it

Cesco,

Mr Chorley was mentioned in the communications I had with the CAA. He sounds like a very reasonable guy.
Whats the problem with you then, is it similar to mine?

Yep, same sort of problem, i'm a short sighted git, little outside the initial Class 1 limits, but well within renewal limits. I didn't quite understand what exactly is required to go through the deviation route so they put me in contact with Dr. Chorley who was very nice to explain the whole thing to me to avoid any misunderstandings. He is indeed a very nice man, he's one of those who tries n explain things to you so as to actually help you! Not many people like that around, certainly not where I live and work right now!
I do not have a PPL though, so my next step is going to be... ehmm waiting to hear from them after I send some more docs re. my prescription. He said to get in touch again once the docs are in to see if it's alright to book an appointment.. so fingers crossed and good luck to all of us blind bats

?????????? I'm only at

r:-4.25D -1.75D
L:-4.25D -1.50D

that's the most recent prescription.. just had the measurements done yesterday.....

ehmmm...
looks to me like your refraction is within limits for the Initial.
Your best bet though if you want to obtain a UK CAA/JAA class 1 is to ring them and give them your details, they're very helpful and will tell you right away.

Did you raise the issue of Lasik with them? Would be interesting to know what they think of a -6D pre-op prescription.

Currently in possession of a class 1 with a deviation attached. I'm -6.25 in the right eye and -4 (and with 1 dioptre of astigmatism) in the left. Don't give up, you will have to jump through a few hoops to get there but it IS possible The guys at the CAA are great and will go out of their way to help you if you let them, good luck.

Niland: I did speak about LASIK with them, but I've not had the op done, they don't really advise to go for it, but don't say no don't do it either. They are happier with my eyes staying the way they are rather than have them "fried" with a laser, so at the mo there is no LASIK in my plans.

Tall Boy: did you have a PPL when you got your Class 1 with deviation? What did you get, the actual Class 1 certificate with a deviation note or letter? Or a Class 2 with an upgrade option to Class 1 upon completion of your CPL? I'd like to apply for an Integrated course IF I manage to get a "deviated" Class 1, to see if this type of Medical is acceptable to them (I know people have managed to enter OATS and FTE with these Medicals...)
