A different class 1 eyesight question!

Got my eyes checked by my optician before i go and blow £400 on a medical. One eye only just makes the standard without correction, but they basically said it will depend on how picky the doctor I get is.

If they (the CAA) think i need the correction will they fail me until i get it? i.e. Should i go and get some glasses before going or can I wait till after and get "signed off" by the CAA once I have?

If their is any doubt at all, get the glasses.
The initital medical examination is as strict as any of the subsequent ones and will pick up on any eyesight deficiancy.

It may cost you £200 or so for the prescription and spectacles, but that's relatively cheap compared to having to fail and pay for another medical.

I would have thought that if you need glasses you ought to get them. The CAA Medical should be a side issue. Your eyesight is for life not just your Class 1 Medical!

The CAA will test your eyes themselves to find out how good your best corrected vision is. Therefore, I wouldn't bother buying the glasses.

Thanks for the responses.

My left eye just makes 6/9, the correction that may be required is so small I can hardly notice any difference.

What I still don't understand is if I go and have the medical done and the CAA decide I need correction, will I fail the medical and then have to go and pay to have a new one after I've gone and got the glasses made up?

You will need to take a copy of your prescription with you for the class one medical. You will find that in low light/night conditions specs will help quite a bit.

Bottom line : acquire a pair of specs, and take then to your medical. Simple.
