Unhappy Urgent: Class 1 medical - sooner appointment needed!

First of all, apologies to the mods for using this forum in a very selfish way but I am truly desperate.

Please don't laugh! Basically I am currently in the running for a sponsorship scheme. However, I need to have my Class 1 medical by the 15th of October. I have only managed to get an appointment for the 12th October. Initially I thought this was OK.

Because I currently have a Class 2 medical I am used to the AME signing and giving me my medical certificate there and then. But I have just realised to my shock and horror that with a Class 1, I will have to wait up to 10 days!!!

If there is anybody out there who is willing to swap their appointment date with me (preferrably around 4th or 5th October) I would be the happiest man in the world. I have asked to be notified of cancellations from the medical dept at the CAA, but they can't do this.

PM me if you would like to help.

Thank you.

Wannabe,
Not sure why you it's going to take 10 days to get your class 1-is it because you're upgrading?
Does it have to be done at the CAA?
If not, then there is a very good AME at Booker airfield (High Wycombe) who does class 1 medicals, and i'm sure there are countless others closer to you that others can recommend.
Good luck.

IIRC Initial Class 1's have to be done at Gatwick. Renewals, thereafter, can be completed by authorised, local AMEs.

That's right, because it's my first Class 1, I have to go to Gatwick and pay the full £337. Even though I just renewed my Class 2 a month ago!

Have you tried chatting them up at Gatwick and telling them the problem?

Ask them to put you on the list for a FTA. You might have to be prepared for minimum notice, but worth a try.

Surely explaining the situation to the sponsors will sort it out? No sponsor can be silly enough to cast you off for this reason alone!

Good luck,

V1,

Oxford AviationTraining are putting forward 12 candidates to Excel Airways (the sponsoring airline), thus I don't even know if I am going to get to Stage 3 yet. However, if am one of the lucky 12 to be given the chance to go to Gatwick for an interview with XL (of which they will take on 6) Oxford will not put me forward unless I have the medical in my hand.

I suspect Oxford will use this to filter out lots of candidates who could not be bothered to get their medical before the set deadline.

Thanks all, still waiting for that opportunity. So far, I have not found anyone at the medical dept who is remotely concerned!

Still waiting if anybody wants to he help I have managed to speak to a nice lady though who has promised to ring me should there be any cancellations and even took my mobile number just in case I wasn't contactable elsewhere. I'm not the only one in this situation.

you got it? if not, why not go abroad? HP is not quite up to date, our pilots don't have to go to Gatwick for the initial: If you got a flight out to Prague today, you would be home tonight with the medical, and the cost difference would cover a lastminute ticket. initial class one is EUR170. Other places are cheaper, but may not be so quick. Do a search on here.

good luck, IP
