Several questions concerning a Class 1/2 Medical.

Hello,
I came across this forum some time ago and just registered. I have got several questions concerning Class 1 and 2 Medicals.

I am interested in starting to work on my PPL and eventually going into commercial aviation after finishing school. I know that I would only need a Class 2 Medical to get a PPL-License, but as far as I know eyesight can be as low as -5 diopters when you renew a Class 1 Medical. Therefore, I wonder if it is possible to apply for a Class 1 Medical although you are only planning on starting to work on a PPL License.

Another question to me is, if the Medical examiner has an index in which a minimum / maximum weight to every height is assigned or if these values are flexible?

I am 180cm`s tall but only weigh 57 kilos (but do most likely still gain weight ..)

Would you recommend to me to apply for a Class 1 Medical or only for a Class 2 Medical at the moment?

I am 17 years right now, will finish school in 1 1/2 years and live in Germany and thus would need a german (JAR?) medical.

Any answer will be appreciated.

A class 1 medical can be used for a PPL so there is no problem there. Since you are wanting to get into commercial flying I'd recommend getting a class 1 straight away, then you'll know that you can continue with your plan.

Tim,

I was in your position about a year and a half ago. I elected to go for a Class 2 medical to start with for a couple of reasons.

1. At the time I couldn't afford the £421 for a Class 1 medical. This fee has since gone down to £337 thanks to the EEG test being removed from the examination. I realise in the long run it costs more to do both, but for me the issue was cash flow.

2. I knew that even if I couldn't fly commercially, I'd still want to do my PPL. Thus, I couldn't really lose (unless of course you happen to be unlucky enough to fail the class 2 medical).

However if you can afford to do the Class 1 examination, I'd suggest you do it since the Class 1 certificate can be used for Class 2 validities. This basically means that even if you let your Class 1 lapse after 12 months, you can still fly on your PPL for a further 4 years, on the same certificate.

Hello and thanks for answering...

By the way: if you let your Class 1 Medical lapse after 12 month, will you be able to get a new one with the renewal standards or would you have to pass the whole class 1 initial examination again?

Renewal standards.

As I understand it you only ever have an initial once, ever.

If you let a Class 1 lapse for more than five years you have to go back to Gatwick again...unless that's changed.
