Jerricho,

Thank you for raising an interesting subject. I spent a Christmas party a couple of years ago arguing with someone about Aspartame - his sister was ill in hospital suffering from the alleged effects of imbibing Aspartame by drinking Diet Coke. He gave me sufficient pause to think and since then I've avoided eating or drinking products that contain Aspartame. His view was that if the substance hadn't been invented in the US of A, then it would be banned world-wide.

When I drink Coke or other soft drinks, I now go for the teeth-rotting versions, as the lesser of 2 evils. Best of all is to drink fruit juices with no additives - just the squeezed juice. Most 'diet' products such as yoghurts have Aspartame in them, too; you're better off with the 'natural' products even if their fat content is a little higher. The best way to diet is to eat less, not pour lots of 'diet' foods down you neck.

Cheers,
The Odd One

I'm sure Art Bell is on the case, but for me, I don't use asparatame because it tastes like ass.

Interestingly, between 15 and 20 years ago, the British CAA advised pilots to avoid foodstuffs containing this chemical. The advice was withdrawn I believe under threat of lawsuit from the manufacturer.

For myself, too much anecdotal evidence plus the experiences of a couple of acquaintances who's symtoms of ME (Yuppy Flue) disappeared when they stopped imbibing.

If you want to eat it, by all means carry on. I'll stick to the safe options of fags and alcohol.

Given that 99% of statisitics are made up consider this.

Around 80% of all complaints to the US Federal authorities since 1985 relate to aspartame. That’s 20% for everything else, on the market or prescribed.

Don't shoot the scientist

....... especially if their work has been publicised by a special interest group.......

The original scientific article is here http://www.ramazzini.it/fondazione/d...ameGEO2005.pdf

You can also search the authors previous scientific publicaltions here....
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/q...tory&DB=pubmed

M.Soffritti is a well known carcinogenesis expert..............

Whilst the web site above was most certainly that of a special interest group, the experimental findings are in the least worrying, provided that can be repeated by other scientists.
