Leg Cramps

Leg cramps at night have been part of life for me and my children for many years, it was a problem for my father too.The cramps are occasional during normal life but pretty guaranteed after a long haul flight. I would make around six very long hauls a year prior to retirement, since I have retired I make 2 or 3 a year. On my last trip to Australia I was persuaded to wear compression socks, properly measured and ordered to suit my legs and feet, and i found them quite comfortable and easy to wear. The trouble is the leg cramps on the first nights after arrival on both outward and inward journeys were the worst I have ever experienced in my life. The first night in Oz after sitting in a restaurant for 2 hours I stood up to leave, cramped up and couldn't walk for at least ten minutes. This has never happened before, anyone know if the socks could be a contributory factor??

I read somewhere (can't remember where I'm afraid) something similar and it suggested an iron deficiency. Maybe trying an iron supplement will help - shouldn't do any harm anyway.

More likely than an iron deficiency, the reason for your cramps is a deficiency of calcium and/or magnesium. Try supplements, or just have a glass of milk every day!
Good luck!

Salt.

If you're fit blood pressure-wise, ladle it on for a few days. Quite a lot posted on this a year or so ago.

Search under Loose rivets / medical forum if all else fails.

Sounds like a case of vitamin or minerals that are lacking.
I have had a similar problem(after exercise in my case-or all day parked in the 152 instructing!)
My doc put me on to Electrolyte Balance, in powder form, mixed with water.
Blood tests also found a slight lack of magnesium too.
I take the Electrolyte and some magnesium tablets,(when exercising) and have had no further trouble.

Dehydration call also cause these problems.
Sounds like a visit to the Doc might be in order.

Good luck.
