Lump in arm pit, then gone...

About a week ago (while showering) I discovered a lump in my left arm pit, about the size of a grape.

The day before I didn't notice anything.

The day after it had shrunk.

Now it's gone, as far as I can tell.

I'm out on the road right now and I thought (at the time) that I would have it looked at when I got home but now there's nothing to show.

So in lieu of an expensive visit to the doctor I thought I would consult the medical experts on Pprune.

What do you think? Do glands (or cysts) swell for no apparent reason? I have *not* been sick.

I never noticed anything in my right arm pit.

Thanks.

Have had similar.

Docs told me it could be a swollen lymph/sweat gland, and no worries, as long as it is only temporary. If lumps stay longer than a week, they told me to come back.

Hope this helps to reassure you. Lumps can be quite scary, so I would consult docs for peace of mind.

Hello again Capt Gameskeeper

Thanks for relating your experience. I hadn't considered a sweat gland.

I've had the same thing recently and discovered it was an ingrown hair - yuck!

It had caused a swelling which was quite painful to the touch then disappeared only to return a month later.

My doctor prescribed some penicillin and told me to report back if it happened again as I may need to have an op to remove it!

Hope it works out for you, always best to get these things checked though.

Ingrown hair?

Yikes.

No pain in my pit though.

Thanks anyway.

The harmless swelling of a lymph gland is called a "lymph adenopathy" and may be a response to a localized infection of which you might not be aware. They are there for a while, then disappear.

I'm not a doctor, but I do play one on pprune, and would suggest a trip to the sawbones when you get back home...even if you have nothing to show him. He might want to check some other stuff you wouldn't think of.

I could tell you what those things are, but then I'd have to bill you.

A very impressive display of Latin...,

...anatomy, and restraint!

Thank you very much Bafanguy. I hope I can return the favor one day.

I am NOT a Doctor

Swollen lymph glands in the groin and armpit are sometimes the result of a small infection, insect bight, boil, etc. in that area.
Check your arm, hand, leg, or foot on that side, to try to find the cause.
The lymph nodes "filter" the poisons by trapping them, thus temporarily increasing in size.

Kaptin M is quite right - look for something on that side that could have caused infection.
Apparently, my grandfather had a big swelling under his armpit after he had been pecked by a chicken earlier in the day - it was the late 1940s and he was reluctant to go to the doctor - died of "blood poisoning" I am told!

I had 2 in my groin come up... quite painful and made sitting on a motorbike a pain in the... well... anyway.

Went to doctors (very reluctantly given the said area...) but he put me on a course of antibios and within 7-10 days both totally gone.

Lump under armpit

I had a lump under my armpit in 2002, diagnosed by GP as a pulled muscle or bruising after ski fall. 2 months later AME insisted on biopsy, result was malignant melanoma in 15 out of 17 lymph glands. Prognosis is 27% SURVIVAL chance to 5 year point, unable to hold Class 1 for 5 years from date of operation, so get it checked!

Damned good AME, I hope you thanked him (if not your GP! ) Best of luck with your continued recovery.

Incidentally I have a fair selection of small lumps, which were diagnosed by both my GP and (when I asked for a second opinion to be safe) my AME as an obscure and unspellable condition where the insulation on my nerve endings gets bigger than it should and slowly enlarges - doubling in size about every five years. Fortunately in my case, nothing more than a mild irritant and has no effect on my flying medical - but scared the (*&*&! out of me when I first found the lumps.

If in doubt, see a doctor - gives them a change from writing sick notes.
