CASA Class 1 Medical
Hello,
I'm going to have my Class 1 Medical Test next week and I'm a bit nervous about it. I've read the CASA website but do not really understand what they exactly mean by those medical terms. It'd be greatly appreciated if someone can give me a simple explanation on what will be done on that day and whether I will get my results straight after or not.
I am wearing glasses and have read that the eyesight test is done with and without the glasses, this is one reason why I am nervous because when I don't have my glasses on, I can't see things very well especially 20 feet away (I should be able to see the larger letters but definately not the small ones. Will this be a problem to me in the Class 1 Medical? Also one doctor told me to wear my glasses all the time except when I have my shower and sleep. Another doctor told me to wear the glasses only when I need to, I'm not sure which one is correct and would greatly appreciate it if anyone could give me some information on this. A friend of mine told me it could be bad to wear my glasses a lot because my eyes would rely on them and get worser. I've also heard others say that not wearing my glasses all the time will also make my eyes worser. This has been bugging me for a while now.
Also, I am having doubts that I am a little deaf. I hear no ringing noise or anything, I am fine with conversations but feel a little bit of pain sometimes in my right ear. I seem to hear others properly but I always have a feeling that my ear is a little deaf
. It also gets a bit itchy inside when I listen to a particular type of noise (not sure which). A friend of mine told me to hold my nose and try to blow air out of my noise and this should get rid of the problem, it seems a bit better but still seems to be lurking around. I remember this itchiness problem around 6 years old. It hasn't affected me much when I talk to others right in front of them but when they talk or whisper into my right ear, this problem occurs. Will my ear be a problem to the Class 1 Medical?

Why Worry ?
The only advice I can offer as anyone else can is just do your medical, that will determine whether you have a problem in so far as flying is concerned.
In fairness, no-one can probably really comment on your concerns as you express above, although if it is any comfort, many pilots wear corrective lens to pass their Class 1.

Thank you for your reply, do you mean they wear contact lenses without letting the D.A.M.E know?
If not, I do have a pair of glasses but I read when doing the eyesight test, you're not allowed to wear any glasses. Is this true?

Contact lenses are easily spotted by the doctors doing the testing. You're fooling only yourself if you try and get around it.
It is advised that you don't wear contact lenses to the medical but wear your specs instead. I have forgotten why but I wear specs, not contacts so it's never been an issue.
(An aside, I only wear my specs when I need to watch tv, drive and fly. Reading, using the computer and generally wandering about the house I don't wear them.)
For the eye test, you'll have to do the reading with and without your lenses. If your eyesight is corrected to a suitable level then you'll pass that bit. (unlike JAA)
Hearing test. Keep away from loud noises leading up to the test. If you ride a loud motorbike, wear ear plugs (should do it any way). Don't blast your ears with noise for about 24 hours prior to the test. It's not a big deal.
The Australian medical is pretty straight forward. Basicaly, if you're in reasonable condition, can hear, can see, don't have diabetes, you'll pass. Relax.

I'm sorry but I don't really understand that line, can you please explain to me what it means in a simpler form if possible?
Also, my eyes are -1.75 for my left eye and -1.00 for my right eye, is this ok? Once again, thank you very much!

Points system in class one medical is a bit of a worry as you get older, at age 51 I lose 10 points straight away, so predictive side of medical can be more of a worry...eg weight vs blood cholesterol
vs blood pressure = X score . Max points is 14 (I think)
as for glasses i have worn them all my flying life and have never had a worry with corrected vision always passing with flying colours (so to speak). Bottom line is as long as your reasonably fit and healthy, (which you should be or ya gonna die anyway)
and can see what you are looking at (and if you can't you gonna die) you will breeze through. BUT don't tell the DAME any lies.... that's what will get you in strife !

Your eyes need to be corrected to ~6/6 or 20/20 vision in the old money. ie can you see fine with your specs/lenses?
I don't know the exact numbers, if I didn't wear specs I couldn't pass the eye examination (in the UK or Australia). With them on, I'm fine

i have a class 1 and yes they do chek your eyes with and without the glasses on.I can tell you now that it is a myth that your eyes become worse if you wear your glasses too frequently.i had my check up with the optician yesterday and i asked if your eyes become more dependant on glasses the more you wear them and the answer is no.your are not that shortsighted, so you will have no problem passing, if your eyes are also healthy, which im sure they are.as for the hearing, as someone mentioned, no loud noises prior to the test.i wouldnt even listen to my walkman the dady before mine! best of luck with it!!

Boeing737, what are your views on it? Should I wear glasses only when I need them or frequently?
