RIP His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh
Palace has announced he passed away peacefully this morning. RIP

A rock to the Queen. I wonder how long she will last without him by her side.

treadigraph 9th Apr 2021 11:22

Just saying to a friend yesterday, will the Queen send him a telegram for his 100th...

Liked the old bugger... RIP.

Had the pleasure of showing him around at a Mil-related event. He was in his element talking about life in the services! :ok:

Absolutely down to earth and simply would not leave - which was not a problem at all! Finally, after considerably over-running his planned visit, he sadly observed "Well, I better be off. "You know who" will be wondering what I've been getting up to!". His Security team were having kittens too!

RIP, Your Royal Highness

As other have posted. Always liked him for being himself.

There was a story about him going trans-Atlantic in an RAF Comet - as was his wont, he spent most of the flight chatting on the flight deck. After a lengthy period, one of the crew reached over and adjusted a knob on something, autopilot, radio, whatever. "Crikey" said the Duke, "it's all go up here isn't it?"

Not just big stuff with wings...

A sad loss. He seemed a very likeable man.

Nige321 9th Apr 2021 12:04

Not sure how accurate this is, I've seen it a couple of times.
His log books would make interesting reading...

RIP DoE...

The Duke of Edinburgh gained his RAF Wings in 1953, his helicopter wings with the Royal Navy in 1956, and his Private Pilots Licence in 1959.
He gave up flying in August 1997 after accumulating 5,986 hours as a pilot in 59 types of aircraft in 44 years.

Very sad.. Commiserations to all the family. A WW2 veteran who got a 'Mention in Despatches'

It is incredible for how long he served his country. And being No. 2 in style.

Alsacienne 9th Apr 2021 12:36

A remarkable, loyal and supportive subject. Thank goodness that HM had his strength and love for so many years. RIP your Royal Highness, and sincerest condolences to Her Majesty and the members of the Royal Family.

Duke of Edinburgh's Award (for youths) did a power of good to several generations

Geordie_Expat 9th Apr 2021 12:47

I would like to echo the above posts, a remarkable man.

Auxtank 9th Apr 2021 13:00

I was lucky enough to bump in to him on horse back in Windsor Great Park early one morning many years ago and got a cheery; "Good morning" from him. He was some distance away before I realised who he was. He just looked like a thoroughly normal chap out for a morning ride. Which of course, he was, only with an extraordinary job which he carried out to perfection.

Specaircrew 9th Apr 2021 13:40

RIP Sir and sincere condolences to Her Majesty and the Royal Family.

Kiltrash 9th Apr 2021 13:51

RIP Sir.
We were on holiday in Braemar late '60's which is near Balmoral and walking down the high street actually bumped into a tall man and after the apologies not looking etc realised it was the Duke. He was out buying sweets. Looked round for security and none to be seen so had he sneaked put for a quarter of Weathers Originals? Had a short nice chat and he was off Salmon fishing, and no I did not wangle a invite 😐

CISTRS 9th Apr 2021 13:52

The only time I was within earshot of Her Majesty the Queen, at the opening of a building in the City of London, her major question was "Where is Philip?"
Such a sad loss for all of us.
