Unbelievable and worth a look!

Oops. (The article is convinced the ship's name is 'Ever Given'.)

Umm... if you look at the last picture, you will see "EVER GIVEN" as the name on the bows, and the owners are EVERGREEN painted on the side.

Strewth - imagine the conversation on the bridge as she started to drift right of centreline.
"Left rudder Hoskins, left rudder....!!!"

What kind of tide fall can you expect in the canal?

and where the hell is Ancient Mariner when you need him ?

nonsense 24th Mar 2021 02:18

Suez tides.

visibility3miles 24th Mar 2021 03:08

How did it get crosswise to the canal in the first place?

I assume that if the bows ground when underway the vast momentum of the ship has to go somewhere. If the path of least resistance is to swing the boat around rather than driving the bows further into the mud, that is what will happen.

Expensive parking ticket created!

Loss of power, including steering, according to an expert on the BBC WS.

Apparently large ships tend to swing to the right (sorry, starboard) when that happens.

They are looking at offloading fuel and, if necessary, containers to refloat it. That sounds like fun.

SOPS 24th Mar 2021 08:05

I wonder why they swing to the right?

Only in the Northern hemisphere... :E

Well, I won't complain about getting stuck in a jam on the M11 again...

(M25 I will, and I don't use the M1 south of the M18!)

They are floating voters...

Thai Pom 24th Mar 2021 08:27

Myself and a group of school friends did this on a smaller scale on the Midlands canals in a rented houseboat back in the day.
The CAMRA Real Ale Guide to the waterways did not explain how to get out of the situation...........

treadigraph 24th Mar 2021 08:35

Thai Pom, had you been sampling Marston's Even Keel?
