So, in a year plus some months, the situation may be as follows:

• UK has overridden / edited / breached / de-facto terminated the NI protocol
• EU has as a consequence terminated the entire withdrawal agreement, which requires a year's notice
• There are hence zero trade arrangements between the UK and the EU countries
• In theory, hundreds of thousands of citizens of both the UK and EU countries could get deported.
• Dublin has had to reinstate the internal border to NI
• The Good Friday agreement is hence dead in practice
• The troubles have started again

In all aspects, the UK would be back by 50 years in regards to relationships and arrangements with it's neighbors.
Be kind to forward this to Boris & co, as he's almost certainly not thinking that far ahead.

I've been away from the day to day political manoeuvrers in the UK for a bit, could anyone more up to date, post a precis as to why the impending "reworking" of the NI Protocol is happening?

I have family members in NI and none seem to be bothered in the least with the current arrangements, in fact some are making out nicely.

Of far greater importance, will the proposed amendments affect my ability to have Veggie Roll delivered here down south in a timely manner from Messrs Hoy in Portadown... now that's a red line...

That made me laugh. You make a great point. I think you should be ok with that veggie roll Mini. However a warning ..... it may be made with contents not approved or inspected by the EU, not package approved by the EU, not label approved by the EU and then delivered into an EU country. Bless them all. It should however be a great flavour, possibly sweet and bring a wry smile when eaten !

Time then for some hard ball on the NI border procedures. Legislation for establishing green and red channel import of goods will speed things up and confirm trusted trader status for the majority who comply. As suggested by UK PM Johnson...years ago ! Please push the EU hard Ms Truss.
Perhaps any objection to this, by the EU, could result in the UK border control introducing red channel procedures for all eu goods and non brit passengers entering the UK. A full vehicle inspection, with emission control tests followed by a strip search of ...well everyone.
