I don't know for how long you've been a resident, but it was a Labor Government who decided to recommend to HMQ that this country would no longer be part of the Imperial honours system. Way back in 1975. It was a good move. Malcolm Fraser later decided to appoint knights and dames ( AK and AD respectively) but this was countermanded by Bob Hawke during his time as PM. Australia is an egalitarian society that does not need this kind of differentiating bullshit. The two latest recipients are paid handsomely to do the tasks they perform. Isn't that sufficient reward? |
Have to agree,Ken,they do get sufficient reward.
Thompson is still protesting his innocence. I thought that he had admitted spending the money. |
Have been here as a permanent resident since 1982. Between 1978 and 82 I flew back and forth 6 times.
"Australia is an egalitarian society that does not need this kind of differentiating bullshit. The two latest recipients are paid handsomely to do the tasks they perform. Isn't that sufficient reward?" No, I don't think so. I think the jury is out on Quentin but Cosgrove, all for the man :ok: IMHO, Cosgrove is more egalitarian than most lefties but has done more for this country than most as well. |
Bosnich
It is now the Victoria Cross for Australia. Everything else stayed the same. |
500 ....."now the Victoria Cross for Australia".... that's precisely what I'm wafting on about. Why didn't Australia drop the entire Imperial Honours system, especially when all other imperial military honours were dropped.
|
Got rid of something and not replaced it with much ! Functionally the same, more cost and less prestige and majesty. Mind you thye could try to swing it so they actually had some power, then we would really have a dysfunctional system. |

I have to say I think Tony Abbott has made a mistake on the Knight/Dame issue. My guess would be that 99% of voters under the age of 35 would think it's a step backwards to something they do not identify with in any way.

MTOW
I think you are correct in your assessment. Bosnich Disagree. The VC should always be kept, regardless if anything else is or was. Too much invested in it. "If Labor had their way they would get rid of the Monarchy and replace it with a republic and a president, talking about replacing it with nothing." President Rudd  (I need a spew smilie !) |
( AK and AD respectively) but this was countermanded by Bob Hawke during his time as PM. As I understand it, it is not a return to the old Imperial Orders. Otherwise we'd also be seeing the reintroduction of OBE's, MBE's etc. Merely the restoration of the Order of Lenin's:} ...er sorry, got that wrong... Ordure of...whoops, wrong again..:O (deep breath) Order of Australia's top gongs!:D Really couldn't care less m'self but whatever floats your boat etc. |
Back to real politics, no doubt clouded by Abbott's smokescreen announcement about reintroduction of outmoded honors. Is this right wing ideologically-driven rabble really serious by suggesting that race-hate laws be wound back? It really is hard to take them seriously but I fear that they are. Why would anyone in his or her right mind think that he or she has a right to be a bigot or racist and have an unfettered right to sprout their bigotry or racism? Where is the LNP taking our welcoming and open society? I weep, I do, especially for our children and grand-children. :(
Pinky, The Bunyip Aristocracy was a term used to describe Australians wanting to emulate the British (English?) aristocracy. It was used many many years before the advent of the Order of Australia. |
"Why would anyone in his or her right mind think that he or she has a right to be a bigot or racist and have an unfettered right to sprout their bigotry or racism?"
Because the left thinks it is perfectly OK to sprout anti capitalist, capitalist pig and all manner of other obscenities at people conducting legal activities that they object to, so much so that that laws have to be specifically passed to keep them at bay from doing it. It works both ways. BTW, the Aboriginals are the most racist of all Australians ! Ken Was it you I had a long discussion on this forum over the use of the word "Abo" ? |

What, you mean like those banners that the mad marchers had the other week, spewing vile things about Tony Abbott? Or the signs asking for the beheading of people who insult the prophet, as seen in Sydney, a while back? You mean things like that?
|
SOPS
No. Your allusion is quite another issue. It's ironic isn't that people are now complaining of disparaging signs about TA yet those same critics were silent about similar signs that were demeaning of PM Gillard. Their hypocrisy is quite breathtaking. I think we all need to broaden our thinking. :ok: |

Ken, you really do live in a parallel universe to the one most of live in, don't you? Do you honestly believe the staff you write, or do you write it hoping to get a bite? If that's the case, I suppose I just 'bit'.
|
500 .... I'll give up on the Victoria Cross argument,I'm fed up of banging my head on the proverbial brick wall however, I still think that if Australia decided to get rid of all Imperil Honours then good on 'em but, keeping the most prestigious stinks of hypocrisy. And if the V.C.has so much invested in it,and no argument from myself about that, then so do the other bravery awards which have disappeared from the Australian landscape.
I'm with Ken on this crap about Sirs and Dames,Mr.Abbott has scored an unnecessary own goal which will just give the "socialists" more ammunition. P.s I used to be a Socialist once .... then I visited East Berlin, just for a day, that was enough. |

Ben Fordam on 2GB said today that he thinks Tony Abbott's incredibly misguided move back in time to resurrect titles that are risable to the vast majority of Australians will be a huge boost to the until now almost dormant Republican movement. I tend to agree with him. A huge mistake onAbbott's part showing him to be seriously out of touch with the majority of Australians, particularly those under the age of 35.

I see two dad's has stuck her nose into the mess passing a motion in the Senate to obtain the video and investigate the incident.

Once again, SHY thinks that if its on the TV, it MUST be true..
