The Macquarie Dictionary has announced it is broadening the definition of the word "misogyny".
As it stands, the reference book says misogyny is a hatred of women, the kind that's pathological.
But editor Sue Butler says it's time that changed to reflect what Ms Gillard really meant last week when she accused Opposition Leader Tony Abbott of sexism and misogyny during a speech to parliament.
Oh goody. There's a couple of words I'd like changed, just so people don't get the wrong idea about what I'm saying.

Lets not say she used the wrong words to describe him, oh no, lets just change the dictionary.

Newspeak. Double plus good eh? :hmm:

Surprise , Surprise. Gillard files missing, say lawyers

Worrals in the wilds 17th Oct 2012 03:06

Please tell me that's a joke Buster, please...:ooh:
Crap. Googled it and it's not a joke. Mind you the Macquarie always has been a really average dictionary, and very red hot Labor. It makes you wonder how many people actually buy dictionaries these days.:8

Worrals, Red is even more confused now,
She and me both! :}

Surprise , Surprise. Gillard files missing, say lawyers
No worries. They'll find them at the house of Craig Thomson's friend who looks like Thomson, signs like Thomson has Thomson's credit card... but isn't Thomson. :suspect:

Here's one for the Newspeak dictionary.

Misopolitika. The hatred of politicians.

Our esteemed sub-prime minister went arse over tit in India, and fortunately there was a camera close by to catch her embarrassment.

PM spreadeagled in fall

I'm hoping that in the near future there will be an even more spectacular fall from grace.:D:D

STOP PRESS: Her spinmeisters have already blamed Tony Abbott.

So clearly it's asking too much for those in the Labour Party to have a grasp of English.:hmm: Onya Sue, let's just change what the word means to suit the feminazi agenda. Is reality imitating art? Think
1984's "Newspeak"!:mad:
Here's a couple more words whose meaning you may want to revise: honesty, liar, criminal.

sitigeltfel 17th Oct 2012 09:35

Why alter the meaning of a word just because an individual has misused it?

BBC News - Australia PM Julia Gillard prompts 'misogyny' definition update

Would it be fair to say that she, and many of her "sisters" are guilty of "Misandry"?

Worrals in the wilds 17th Oct 2012 09:55

Fair call. IME they're certainly not winning any points with the boofy, male PPE wearing members of the party at present. Once Were Workers...

I'm waiting with bated breath to see the Macquarie Dictionary's new definition of Australian Labor Party. :uhoh:
Maybe they'll just go with a picture:

From personal experience, it's best not to wear fancy shoes in India. You invariably step on something squishy. You'd think that the PM would have plenty of recent practice at dodging squishy stuff lying on the pavement, but obviously not...:}

Clare Prop 17th Oct 2012 15:39

I'll be interested in the new translation of the greek word meaning "people power". Maybe Oakshott and WIndsor could do that one.

Asylum seekers turn pirates, seize boat, attack crew off Sri Lanka | thetelegraph.com.au

A GROUP of asylum seekers intent on travelling to Australia turned pirate and took over a fishing vessel off Sri Lanka - apparently attacking crew members.

Sri Lanka's High Commissioner to Australia, Admiral Thisara Samarasinghe, said a badly injured survivor from the boat had been rescued by the Sri Lanka Navy and taken to hospital.

There are conflicting reports about the fate of the three other fishermen who were on the boat that was boarded.

Naval Spokesperson Kosala Warnakulasooriya told Sri Lanka's Times Online that the remaining crew of the boat - the Thejan putha - opted to continue their journey with their captors.

The Thejan putha is now said to be travelling towards Australia with 14 people on board, Mr Warnakulasooriya said.
Am i the only one who thinks these are not the first murderers we'll be welcoming at Christmas Island?

Am I also the only one who strongly suspects that Julian Burnside or someone similar will rush, at taxpayers' expense, to defend these murderers and have them stay in Australia whatever they've done because Sri Lanka has the death penalty?

allan907 18th Oct 2012 08:33

Burnside's the favourite - he's already hot to trot having just finished a job for Gillard/Roxon on the Slipper case.

Meanwhile..... following her holier than thou rant in Parliament Gillard goes on to prove the worthlessness of her words and betrays her bogan background and behaviour by calling Abbott gutless and a coward. I wonder if Macquarie will redefine the word 'hypocrisy'?

SOPS 18th Oct 2012 08:46

And in other news....a few moments ago another 64 "new arrivals" were intercepted on the way to Christmas Island. That makes for over 200 in the last 48 hours!!! The 'risk of been sent to Naru' is going really well, isn't it.:ugh:

Andu 18th Oct 2012 10:00

And another boat as well off Cocos Island. Wayne Swan Budgeted for 450 'irregular arrivals' a month and the budget "is still in surplus".

Sure it is.
It's going to be really interesting to watch how the Gillard "government"(!) handles these pirates/murderers when (and particularly after, and after, and for [I suspect] years after...) they arrive at Cocos Islands.

SOPS 18th Oct 2012 10:10

450 a month!!!?!! We are getting more that a week!!! And the Naru threat is not stopping them Good job Julia, another trmendous policy success!!:mad:

Or gutless/coward. Now defined as 'someone the ALP heirarchy don't agree with'. If only the Macquarie had any relevance when compared with urbandictionary or google (or even the Oxford) it would be seriously scary...:eek:
But it doesn't. :bored::}

Interesting article in the Age.

In Kafka's Australia, chilling bureaucratic violence against asylum seekers breaks them down slowly.
SO THIS is what ''no advantage'' looks like. We have barely started sending asylum seekers to Nauru and already there has been an attempted suicide. By hanging, according to the psychiatrist who reported it. The end result was that three more asylum seekers opted to return home rather than face our immigration system.
That brings the tally of voluntary returns to about 40 - 40 people who decided the situation was so grim, so hopeless that they were better off returning to the place they were fleeing.
There's something chilling about the government citing these as ''steps forward'', but that's the logic of deterrence. It means we have to take the misery that produces asylum seekers, then raise it. And since we can't simply inflict direct violence on detainees, we have to do it in more subtle ways, namely by destroying their sense of hope. That's why people are attempting suicide so quickly, because we're telling them they are going to Nauru to languish, not to be processed.
