Re "BTW a friend of mine's dad was a doctor in Eastern Europe and HE had to do two years on the snowy scheme before he could requalify as a doctor here. In those days refugees were grateful to have food and shelter and a future in a safe place. "

The circumstances were slightly different then in that the whole of Europe had had 6+ years of war / total destruction and most were glad to get out of the place. Australia was also looking to rebuild / expand so it was a win win. Bonegilla was not the nicest of places but was luxury compared to what some had left.

I doubt the Snowy scheme would have been built as fast if it hasn't have been for the migrants.

"In those days refugees were grateful to have food and shelter and a future in a safe place. "
And the same should apply today but doesn't - they seem to expect it.

I see on refugee was flown to Nauru, saw what it was like and said he would withdraw his refugee application and wanted to be returned to Sri lanka !!!

Maybe someone has poisoned her
MAybe she is "convincing" someone to help her - she has previous experience in the bed method to get to the top.

I'm wondering if Gillard is devious enough to have realised that her bid for a SC seat is hopeless so, by going sick, when the bid officially collapses she can step back from the sorry mess and not have to wear the blame for yet another abject ALP failure?

Can't believe the RAAF, so pissed off with the defence cuts, would have slipped something into her food on the 'plane!:E

Takan Inchovit 25th Sep 2012 07:38

The Ruddster did it.
Or else Abbot abbot abbot

I'm kinda glad I'm not on the tourism board of Nauru, the current stream of visitors are preferring the option of torture and persecution back home. :E

Worrals in the wilds 25th Sep 2012 10:58

Too true. Wasn't guano their only selling point? Now they've sold all of it...:uhoh:
I stand to be corrected of course, having never been there. :\

I do recall the flight to Nauru from Brisbane being called the Coles Express by the rampies due to the huge amount of fruit, veggies and other basic foodstuffs it used to carry.

I got the impression that Nauru didn't have much in the way of resources.

Andu 25th Sep 2012 10:59

Larry Pickering has an interesting spin on the Nauruan angle to our current involvement with that nation.

Larry Pickering

Restive Naurun Members of Parliament have secretly been given all expenses paid Australian holidays in order to allay their stated fears of coping with thousands of asylum seekers.

Nauru, the World’s smallest republic, has endured a 95% unemployment rate since total depletion of its phosphate (bird shit) reserves. Of the 5% who are gainfully employed, 90% work for the Government.

parabellum 25th Sep 2012 11:55

Wasn't guano their only selling point?
Pretty much. Spent about a year there when there was still a lot of phosphate to be excavated. Nauru is like a huge mushroom standing in 2000' of water.
The phosphate was 97% pure and classified as 'rock phosphate', well that was my understanding anyway. This high quality phosphate was very much in demand and a lot of it went to Japan. Ocean Island also produced phosphate but this was a lower quality and fitted the guano/bird shit description more accurately!

National Geographic did a good article some years ago but I haven't been able to find it on their website so far.

Buster Hyman 26th Sep 2012 22:15

Oh Wiley... Snopes is your friend. ;)

Wiley 26th Sep 2012 22:17

Given that the NSW Liberal Government is apparently in deep trouble with their electorate after a poll conducted on behalf of the Teachers’ Federation found that 72% of the people polled said they would not have voted for the Libs had they known that they were going to sack 1700 bureaucrats (not teachers) within the Education Department, the following might be of interest to some.

If there’s anyone out there who’s a teacher or who knows a teacher, I’d be interested to read a teacher’s reaction to the speech below. (I think I’ve read something similar before, so it could be an urban myth – I couldn’t see anything about it on Snopes.)

What would be the reaction to such a speech by a government (even private) high school principal in Australia? And probably even more to the point, with airheads like Sarah Twodads unable to resist sprouting their Political Correct drivel into any microphone oh so willingly thrust under their noses by the MSM on any and every topic, and the very Left-leaning Teachers' Unions in every state, what would be the career prospects for a principal who made such a speech?

Dennis Prager, Principal at a High School in Toronto, on the first day of classes in 2012.

To: The students and faculty of our High School.

“I am your new Principal, and honoured to be so. There is no greater calling than to teach young people. I would like to apprise you of some important changes coming to our school. I am making these changes because I am convinced that most of the ideas that have dominated public education in Canada have worked against you, against your teachers, against your parents, and against our country.

First, this school will no longer honour race or ethnicity. I could not care less if your racial makeup is black, brown, red, yellow, or white. I could not care less if your origins are African, Latin American, Asian, or European, or if your ancestors arrived here on the Mayflower, leaky SE Asian refugee ships, or on slave ships. The only identity I care about, the only one this school will recognise, is your individual identity -- your character, your scholarship, your humanity. And the only national identity this school will care about is Canadian. This is a Canadian public school, and Canadian public schools were created to make better Canadians.

If you wish to affirm an ethnic, racial, religious identity through your school, you will have to go to another one. We will end all ethnicity - race - and non-Canadian-nationality-based celebrations. They undermine the motto of Canada. Everyone is equal, coast to coast, and this school will be guided by Canadian values. That includes all after-school clubs. I will not authorise clubs that divide students based on any identities. This includes gender, race, language, religion, sexual orientation, or whatever else may become in vogue in a society divided by political correctness. Your clubs will be based on interests and passions ? not blood, ethnic, tribal, racial or other physically defined ties. Those clubs just cultivate narcissism - an unhealthy preoccupation with the self -- while the purpose of education is to get you to think beyond yourself. So we will have clubs that transport you to the wonders and glories of art, music, sport, debating, astronomy, languages you do not already speak, math, carpentry, and many many more. If the only extracurricular activities you can imagine being interested in, are those based on ethnic or racial or sexual identity, that means that little outside of yourself really interests you and that means you don't belong in this school.

Second, I am not interested in whether or not English is your native language. My only interest in terms of language is that you leave this school speaking and writing English as fluently as possible. The English language has united Canadian citizens for more than 200 years, and it will unite us at this school. It is one of the indispensable reasons this country of immigrants has always come to be one country. If you leave this school without excellent English-language skills, your teachers and I will have been remiss in our duty to ensure that you are prepared to compete successfully in the Canadian employment market. You will learn other languages here -- it is deplorable that most Canadians only speak English. But if you want classes taught in your native language rather than in English, this is not the school for you.

Third, because I regard learning as a sacred endeavour, everything in this school will reflect learning's elevated status. This means, among other things, that you and your teachers will dress accordingly. Many people in our society dress more formally for a meal at a nice restaurant than they do for church or school. Those people have their priorities backwards. Therefore, there will be a formal dress code at this school.

Fourth, no obscene language will be tolerated anywhere on this school's property -- whether in class, in the hallways or at athletic events. If you can't speak without using the "F-word," you can't speak. By obscene language I mean the words banned by the Federal Communications Commission plus epithets such as the "N- word," even when used by one
black student to address another, or "bitch," even when addressed by a girl to a girlfriend. It is my intent that by the time you leave this school, you will be among the few of your age to distinguish instinctively between the elevated and the degraded, the holy and the obscene, the educated and the non-educated.

Fifth, we will end all self-esteem programmes. In this school, self-esteem will be attained in only one way -- the way people attain it will be by earning it from their fellow students and teachers. One immediate consequence of this is that there will be only one class valedictorian, not eight.

Sixth, and last, I am reorienting the school programme toward academics, scholarship, and away from politics and propaganda. No more time will be devoted to scaring you about smoking and caffeine, or terrifying you about sexual harassment or global warming. No more semesters will be devoted to condom-wearing and teaching you to regard sexual relations as only, or primarily, a health issue. There will be no more attempts to convince you that you are a victim because you are not white, or not male, or not heterosexual, or not Christian. We will have failed, if any one of you graduates from this school does not consider himself or herself inordinately lucky -- lucky to be alive, lucky to be well educated, and lucky to be a Canadian.

Now, please stand and join me in singing, OH CANADA to the only flag in Canada. As many of you may not know the words, your teachers will gladly hand them out to you."

Budget axe hangs over super funds as Canberra looks for savings

by: David Uren and Adam Creighton
From:The Australian
September 27, 201212:00AM

THE nation's superannuation industry has been rated among the best in the world at the same time as the Gillard government is warning the $1.4 trillion sector that it will be the target of billions of dollars in budget savings.

Industry sources who have been canvassed by Superannuation Minister Bill Shorten for suggestions on potential savings have been told "nothing is off the table" and that government is looking to raise additional "billions" from the sector.
I have to say I've been expecting something along these lines from Wayne Swan ever since he promised to deliver a clearly impossible surplus. They can't help themselves. They know they get very few votes from the oldies as it is, so, does it matter if they upset them some more?

How come this thread is re arranging the post order ?

I was reading Buster's Snoopes shoot down of Wiley's post
when I realised WILEY'S post had gone.

I then went back to Jet Blast and re clicked the thread
and his post came back but in the wrong order !!! :ugh::ugh:

Wiley 26th Sep 2012 22:57

Thanks Buster, I thought I'd seen something along the same lines before.

My questions re someone making such a speech here in Oz remain. (Highly unlikely, I suspect.)

500N, my fault re the out of order posts - I found a typo (as well as messing up the quote marks) and took the post down to fix it rather than do it 'within Pprune'.

Asylum seekers rescued from boat - The West Australian

Australian authorities have rescued 55 people on a suspected asylum seeker boat northwest of the Cocos (Keeling) Islands, off WA.

Customs vessel Hervey Bay “rendered assistance” to the passengers on board the boat last night, Home Affairs Minister Jason Clare said in a statement today.

The boat is the third to be intercepted last night.

Details about the state of the boat or the type of assistance given were not available.

The passengers have been taken to the Cocos Islands for health and security checks before being transferred to Christmas Island.

Also last night, two boats carrying a total of 53 people were found by border protection vessels north west of the Cocos Islands.

The boats were intercepted by the customs vessel Hervey Bay overnight on Tuesday.

One was carrying 38 people and the other had 15 on board, the federal government said in a statement on Wednesday.

All three boats were to be transferred to the Christmas Island detention facility for security, health and identity checks.

Under the Federal Government’s new offshore processing regime, anyone who arrives by boat without a visa could be sent to Nauru or Papua New Guinea.

I'll bet Down the Swannee wishes that the ABS worked for him.

SYDNEY (Reuters) - Australians are suddenly a whole lot better off after the government statistician "found" A$325 billion in share assets previously unrecognised.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics on Thursday released its latest report on household assets which included massive upward revisions to estimates for equity holdings. Total financial assets were now put at A$3.1 trillion at the end of March, compared to the originally reported A$2.77 trillion.

The revision is worth roughly A$14,380 for every one of the country's 22.6 million people.

"This issue incorporates new estimates for households holding of unlisted shares and other equity in other private non financial corporations," the statistician drily noted.

The value of such equity is now put at A$383 billion at the end of March, compared to the original A$91 billion.

The first of today's boats has arrived - with 195 irregular arrivals and two crew on board.
This is Gillard and Bowen at their devious best. They have signalled they have no intention of stopping the boats, and when all the off-shore centres are full, they will blame Tony Abbot for resisting the Malaysian Solution.
