Esk is lovely, and so are a lot of the towns nearby. If your rels are at Greenbank, the back of Beenleigh and Tamborine Village (not the mountain, that's exxy) areas are very affordable with some nice places. If you're outside 'commute from Brisbane' range (say an hour's drive) property is much cheaper. Beenleigh has a justifiably scary reputation, but that's mainly related to the centre of town, not the rural outskirts.

I'll be out there on Aug 2nd to see the new grandaughter, what's the score on renting an a/c? I've contacted Archerfield but have had no reply. I have a JAR PPL with IMC and night rating. Is it a quick flip around with an instructor or would I have to do an 'Oz' PPL conversion?
You may be better off reposting in the DGP GA forum, I'm not sure how foreign licenses work in Aus. I believe there are ways and means. As for hire, these guys have a good local reputation:

The greens are uncompromising poison to all other parties, it just depends who runs out of milk first (usually the voters).
Exactly. TBQH, I don't think Katter's much better.

It's a "Keep Kate" campaign in Ashgrove with no mention of the ALP and election colours are pink not red.

Either she should declare as an Independent or admit her dishonesty to the electorate.

In the seat of Surfers Paradise we had.....

A candidate for the Liberal Newman Palmer Party

Some Labor goon who lives in Bris (I think)

Family First

Greens

I drew a little box wrote KAP next to it and ticked it................I have never never in my life done that......

But it's not like we're marginal is it?? John Paul Peter Mary Langbroek wins it everytime....doesn't do anything for us and doesn't have to

Our closest school hall, is a shared Surfers / Southport one, on our way out, one of the volunteers asks this guy, what electorate mate? His reply...Moncrief!

Good grief thinks I!! That's our Federal seat.....and these people vote!!

Abbott was doing the exact same thing that Labor was doing Frank. He was offering sweetheart deals with the devil to try and get the numbers to win.

We would be in the same situation with a minority Liberal government forced to deals with the independents.

Meanwhile back with the election and the result looks like it will be a bloodbath and from everyone I have talked to it's about time. The only unknown is just how bad it will be for Labor.

Good luck to all in Queensland and hopefully you will have better representation than you have had in the past.

Fliegs,I remember my Dad saying the same thing when I was young about the candidate in our area which was a blue ribbon Liberal seat.Dad who was a Liberal voter in any case said he should vote for the cardboard cutout of
the guy and it would have done a better job of representing us than the guy himself.

Fliegenmong 24th Mar 2012 13:42

Bing..............I was hoping for a better showing from the hat really!!..

10 yrs ago I'd watch him on landline, and quietly think, what a nutter, and I cannot believe I support the guy now

I don't agree with everything about him.......but I disagree less with him than I disagree with Liberal Newman Palmer or Labor

I wonder how many in Beaudesert didn't realise they just voted for coal seam mining in heir backyard? Caveat Emptor (Buyer beware??) I'd have thought that McLindon would have nailed Beauy!

Anyway, it's all very well to say they have too big a majority, does it really matter in a state without an upper house?

I'm sure reports and the like will get chucked on the trolley, wheeled through Parliament, and be subject of privilege........just as anna did & beattie before her...

The floors yours Campbell........lets see if you and yours are as accountability averse as those you just replaced. I am so glad that creep andrew fraser was booted, what a right c&*t that bloke was!

You bare faced lied about, and then denied knowing of any prior plan / knowledge of the asset sales, that's right out of howards song book mate, and notice how I maintain a deliberate use of 'non capitals' for the worst of the worst of political figures in the country?

I'll be downloading 'Can Dos' 100 day plan, (I haven't read it yet BUT.....) you reckon there's a fair chance that what he doesn't accomplish will be the fault of the previous government? I would reckon so.....

Will be interesting also to see how Campbell will sell off his interests, as he said he would 2 weeks ago, even though he claimed there was no conflict of interest......."I'm not in the wrong, but if I do win, then I'll change my position on financial interests"....WHY Campbell? Why change if there is no requirement to?? No conflict of interest???

100 days Can do!.....any shortfall in performance should have been adequately forecast by your team.....really the 'Because of the previous government' argument really only reveals your lack of due diligence

Anna, a crying shame you were voted back in, an absolute travesty of Justice, you should be in the wilderness with that clown fraser.....you deserve
what howard got, a loss in your own seat

Fantastic result Lex not only for Queensland but for all Australians!

A good lick more of the way these bumbling and dysfunctional Liberals do business in yet another eastern State may be exactly what is needed to shake Australia back to its senses.

Consider their abysmal track record in the VERY short period they have been trusted back at the wheel in Victoria and NSW -

Premier Ted Baillieu has put back his trade trip to China as Victoria looks like being the worst-performing of the state economies.

The Government, in its mid-year report, reveals a deficit of $341 million.

Victoria is in reverse as industry sheds jobs and unemployment rises, while the Government appears to dither.

What's (not) doing in NSW

WITH Premier Barry O'Farrell's team of ministers in power for less than a year, voters would expect them to be champing at the bit to introduce bold new projects.

But a survey of the O'Farrell government's 22 ministers reveals some aren't pushing ahead with a series of bold reforms or enterprises, but launching more reviews, drawing up more plans and trumpeting projects that are already under way, some begun by the former Labor government.

Unbelievable, these clowns spent 16 years telling everyone what was wrong with NSW but now all of sudden they have no answers..................

Hmmm - why does that theme sound oh so familiar. :E

A year of watching Can Do & Co doing the same - and worse - in bed with the White Shoe Brigade will certainly not do any harm whatsoever to the re-election chances of Gillard Labor federally.

Consider their abysmal track record in the VERY short period they have been trusted back at the wheel in Victoria and NSW -
Too right Zorro,
I was watching NSW Premiere Barry O'Farrell trying to explain his broken promise of stopping the toxic waste being dumped in Kemps Creek in western Sydney. He was shown TV footage of his promising to stop any dumping of waste into Kemps Creel during his election campaign.
In fact he said "

"To dump it in Western Sydney is stupid, it's a threat, and it's not the way any government would behave."
One of his Ministers had this to say

Finance Minister Greg Pearce said: "We are not going to permit a thimbleful of hazardous material to go to Kemps Creek."
Now apparently that they are in power it is OK to break their promise and dump it anyway.

I don't know what the answer is but I don't even know why anyone would listen to any politician and believe what they are saying.

Time will tell in Queensland and as I said good luck to them because Anna Bligh and her government deserved to go but will Newman be any better and not just the same with a different party?

Buster Hyman 24th Mar 2012 15:44

You'd be embarrassed by that if you had 'inside knowledge' of whats really going on...in Vic at least.

MTOW 24th Mar 2012 22:33

The only guarantee is that twelve months from now, Campbell Newman and his government will be incredibly unpopular, for, even if they get everything right, (which is highly unlikely), they'll have to introduce so many unpopular policies to bail Queensland out of the mess Bligh and Beattie have made of it that it's going to hurt everyone's hip pockets.

It will be interesting to see how they deal with all the Labor-appointed State government senior bureaucrats, especially those who, in the last month or so, wrote huge "early severance" payouts into their employment contracts.

RJM 24th Mar 2012 23:20

Beattie, Bligh... I'm just happy to no longer have a Queensland premier grinning from the screen, enthusiastically telling lies.

Lex Talionis 24th Mar 2012 23:28

The Queensland electorate has emphatically and unequivocally answered the question put to them.

Newman has already said that he will not break any promises.

Let's hope now that he has won that he does not follow the well trodden path of excuses such as 'We didn't know how bad the financial state is so we will not be able to deliver on all our promises."

The previous Government took the electorate for granted as so many others have before them and has paid the same price of electoral defeat.

The LNP should remember that as well.

All that said, I'm glad that the protest against Anna and her ratbag bunch of @rse clowns went toward Liberal Newman Palmer rather than the greens.......How many years of 'because of the previous governemnt' are we going to accept though? 1, 2, 5, 8??? When will they 'own it'

My comment was on purely aesthetic grounds, fliegs. Those tombstone teeth and the Cheshire cat grins of that pair really got to me. Sadly, it seems that Beattie - The Man Who Cannot Let Go - has taken it upon himself to direct the future of the Qld and federal ALP and is once again grinning away and dispensing advice.

Why can't these guys go away gracefully, or if thety have to give advice, do it behind closed doors?

"Peter Beattie says Ms Bligh must vacate her South Brisbane seat, so Labor can try to install Mr Fraser or Mr Dick as Labor leader.

He said the defeated premier had a role to play in helping her former transport minister Annastacia Palaszczuk assume a temporary leadership after Labor's bloodbath at the polls.

...we've got to run a similar strategy to what Campbell Newman did. Accept the fact it worked and have a leader from outside the parliamentary party."

Mr Beattie said Labor had no time to lick its wounds, with the federal election 17 months away.

He said federal Labor must immediately come up with a Queensland plan, to ward off a repeat of the Queensland result at the federal level.

"We have to rebuild or the Labor party can lose the next federal election in Queensland alone," the former premier said.

He said federal ministers must be on high rotation through Queensland, to see Labor's policies.

"Julia must buy a house here," he said.

Fliegenmong 25th Mar 2012 03:32

RJM 25th Mar 2012 04:47

Bligh's resigned, completing the trashing of her own legacy: negative, smear campaign; graceless exit speech in which she offered no apology and acknowledged no fault; and a final broken promise (that she'd stay on) meaning a bye election and a further seat lost to the LNP most likely.

She'll retire on a fat super income, indexed for life.

Only up to a point, Zorro.

Howard's appearances seem (hard to tell) to be by invitation, and there are certainly fewer of them than appearances by Beattie in Qld, or for that matter the bevy of old Labor hacks.

But without real data, Zorro, I don't think we'll ever agree.

Btw, compare defeated Ashgrove ALP member Kate Jones' excellent concession speech with Bligh's sour offerings.

Zorro;

I believe your mob once told me, when I complained about the minority government we have now, and how a few "Independants" and some "watermelons" grabbed power and shoved the red queen in our face, that I should simply get over it and get used to it. I didn't get over it.

Now Zorro old mate, soldered on ALP stooge, if you live in Qld, get over it and get used to it. You'll be a while in the wilderness.

Next hop Canberra sunshine and you have a toxic smell in the rear ranks that need excising and hopefully if done, will bring about a change in government.

I can't wait to see the "Independant's" next Lower House polling, nor can I wait to see The Greens "cat's bum" look on their faces when they become irrelevant, when Abbott's bills to repeal the insane legislation are blocked three times in the Senate and give him cause and the legal right for a double dissolution.

The die is cast.:)

Worrals in the wilds 25th Mar 2012 07:12

Bligh's resigned, completing the trashing of her own legacy:
Good.
Several (IMO) decent MPs lost their seats thanks to her campaign. If the ALP can't win Logan something is very broken. :ooh:

It will be interesting to see what leaks out about it, and muddy water is already starting to trickle. There has been commentary in the paper to the effect that not everyone was in favour of the smear Campbell approach. Apparently Beattie was slagging her off all over the morning telly; I didn't see it myself, though.

It will also be interesting to see what happens in South Brisbane. I think a lot of people who did vote for Bligh will be feeling a bit disillusioned.

Fliegenmong 25th Mar 2012 07:19

Ha ha Frank, as you said you didn't get over so shouldn't expect Zorro to either, and per my post 427, that is just utter BS to pull the pin on Sth Bne like that, they should be made to pay for the by-elections they create

We get to go back for local elections here very shortly, same atrociously poor choice of candidates....with any luck Dean Vegas will show up and I can vote for him....

Buster Hyman 25th Mar 2012 07:25

Well go on then buster....do tell!
Yeah...as if! But, I will give you one snippet. Should be in the papers soon anyway. It's actually hard to do anything in this State when the previous Labour Govt. costed projects 'on the back of envelopes' and the real figure is almost triple that costing. You can research the rest & figure out the project if you like...but I reckon you probably wont. Why let facts get in the way of a good moan?

Good to see you back though. You must be in that happy place now. The place where you can snipe from the sidelines knowing that it's not your rabble in charge of the cluster f**k that is QLD!

that is just utter BS to pull the pin on Sth Bne like that, they should be made to pay for the by-elections they create
Have to agree with you on that point. Brumby did the very same thing down here when he lost. Bat, ball, ran home to Mamma! But, don't worry about refuting it, I'm sure there's examples of this BS across all spectrums of politics & its not unique to the ALP.

Fliegenmong 25th Mar 2012 09:26

Well no, if it's going to be in the papers soon, I'll not bother researching, besides. I wouldn't have the foggiest of where to start, and what if I started to research the wrong project, I mean all I really know of Victoria is everyone keeps moving up here, and all the really bad drivers have Vic plates, so you'll have to excuse my ignorance of Victorian state projects...if that is indeed what you were referring to at all......

My rabble? I'm very much a swinging voter, buster, just that howard caused me to swing a looooong way away from the libs., and I, like others, remain a loong way away from them......anna (actually Gillard, shorten, garrett wong et all) has ensured I'm a long way away from them as well

Living here the local rusted on mindset is to vote Liberal, have a look at how much Langbroek won by this time around, and last time.......and it's the same federally (Moncrieff).......The Liberal guys win it no questions asked, and they do nothing other than rely on the rusted on vote.

I see in the seat of Broadwater, it was won by the Liberal Newman Palmer Party candidate, a 26 yr old girl who lives with her Mum.....well i guess that kind of starts to balance the 'experience' tally sheet for the benefit of all those who print lists of experience....

Snipe from the sidelines? A fair question though, how long until campbell 'owns it'? A year from now? 2, 3, 8 when will the excuse of clean up the previous governments mess become tired?

Campbell's track record as Brisbane Lord Mayor isn't exactly sparkling, but he's popular....probably the best the Liberal Newman Palmers have come up with, and they've used a few....some more than once!

No denying this was lost by labor, not won by Lib Newman Palmer.

I was just thinking this thread started back with the Federal leadership fiasco, and it occurs to me that at least Krudd won't die wondering whereas the spineless goon that told us gold was finished and sold of so much of the country's reserve at bargain basement prices...will die wondering

Anyway, lets get on with Campbell's 100 day plan...
