If you're going to critique another posters grammar, typing or spelling, it's best to have your own in order.

It is not their fault 419, they do not realise they have been sold a keyboard minus its shift or punctuation keys.
There are people who post on this board in the same boat.

If I had posted that I would have been careful to put the apostrophe in poster's.

Had I posted the above, I would have inserted a comma in order to separate the clauses in that sentence.

Brilliant and all very witty.

I would suggest perfection in puctuation and grammar are one thing, total ignorance of all the rules is another.

The replies made I chuckle though!

Why?
I'm happy with my use of the English language, and like many people, my typing (both fingers worth) is far from perfect.
However, I certainly wouldn't use "text speak" on an internet forum. (I wouldn't even use it when texting).

As some of the posts following mine have proven, (or is it proved?) it's very easy to miss out a word, apostrophe, or full stop, but it must take an expert to type 2 sentences containing at least a dozen errors.

We're all entitled to the odd typo or 'puctuation' error but the standard of English is often appalling. This is a letter from a firm of lawyers (in the UK)

If that's from a firm of lawyers then perhaps the recipient should be grateful that the statement wasn't coming from a surgeon's secretary.

Our local Waitrose store allows John Lewis card holders to take a bar code scanner and scan their shopping as they go. I noticed that it displays a welcome message and the user's name on the display screen before you start scanning your purchases. There are 7 words displayed, 6 starting un-necessarily with upper case letters and then "mr" or "mrs" as appropriate and the user's initials and name all in lower case.

I asked the manager if they had some work experience youngster enter the user names? He couldn't see what I was getting at. Sad.

There's an awful lot of mysterious letter As coming out of tellybox presenter's mouths lately. A typical one is:
"Here is the a-weather forecast for the a-following week".

No, but it is the standard of every generation to use the characteristics of one data point as evidence of the behaviour of an entire set :E

Or, in other words, looking at AF447 and thinking that every airliner ends up in the sea!

Wyler 1st Jul 2011 09:23

Or is language just evolving?

My daughters communicate by text and that has its own style i.e Wuup2 = What are you up to? etc. I have become quite a fan.
Regarding the example that was used to kick off this thread, it may not have conformed to the norms of Grammar etc but did you understand the message?
So, what is more important, the message or the presentation? I think in this increasingly technological world it is the former. :8

What does get on my T*ts however is when every other word is 'Like'. :=

Regarding UK education as a whole, it is a disgrace. Both of my daughters were taught to pass an exam, not understand a subject. Most of their teachers were young graduates who learnt everything they know about life from a book or a phone app. Some outstanding ones but they are few and far between. However, they are cheap to employ.
The system as a whole is geared to looking after the top 10% and the bottom 10% because they are the ones that generate the headlines. The others, the vast majority, are given the minimum.
