Globish - English for the world

Picked this up on another forum (AWAD actually)

BBC NEWS | Programmes | From Our Own Correspondent | New lingua franca upsets French

Another interesting take on how the lingua franca develops.

I was brought up with, and try to use, "English English", but I acknowledge that there is evolution going on out there.

Vive la différence perhaps!

Well according to QI and Mr Fry, a survey across all France in 1820 found that only twenty percent of the French population actually spoke the French language.

Some years ago I was lectured in a train for 2 hours by a well-oiled Parisian, who spoke with a dreadful accent and grammar, about how the English were too lazy and too stupid to learn any other languages. Quite an argument developed.

Just before he got off the train, I asked him if he spoke any English, or indeed any language other than French.

"Non," he said, and left, convinced of the soundness of his reasoning.

Anything that upsets the Frogs is good http://tbn3.google.com/images?q=tbn:...6tid%3D1926915

Having spent most of my working life in one of the European Organisations I'm used to it.
An old boss of Maastricht UAC's favourite word was collaborators when he meant colleagues. After pointing this out to him for nearly 20 years we eventually gave up and just smiled when he used it.

A Supervisor, also German, marked my English as deficient in an annual appraisal - must have been the 1966 T-shirt that did it:suspect:

Perhaps he knew exactly what he was saying all along and it is he who is smiling now.
