Worst airport you have ever been through (as PAX)

Seeing the thread about Orlando airport, I have been thinking about the worst airport to use as PAX. The worst experience that I ever had was in Greece at a place called Prevesa. Arrival, while not great, was ok. It was on the way back that the full horror was experienced. Check in was initially ok and we were then herded by goons with guns into 'the departure lounge' - a field with the only shade being a small tree and a sort of tent. Of course, when our flight home arrived, the tent became the arrival lounge and the gun goons herded us all out into the midday sun to wait for about an hour and a half. Did they sell drinks ?? No - no water, no coke, no beer - nothing. I've not holidayed in greece since (although to be fair, it was 15 years ago)!!

Anyone had a worse time ?

Worst ever I think for me was Corfu, inbound only one baggage carousel for 5 flights just like a rugby scrum and coming back was delayed so got to spend 6 hours on a dirty floor, toilets were overflowing and nothing was open.

Palma while far better than it used to be can be a headache cos they make you walk about 40 mins from the gate to collect your baggage (try doing it with 2 young kids). Is it true that they always but the British Airlines at the furthest point because it certinaly feels like it.

Finally worst in the UK has got to be Heathrow, used to fly into T1 on the shuttle, never got in or out on time even using the BA lounge you feel cramped, it needs knocking down and starting again. Fly into Gatwick instead now much better.

Borispol (Kiev) - 1992 (about 0400 on a December morning and the driver arrived an hour or so late for my first visit)

I remember once coming into Heathrow from Aberdeeen (flight about 1.25hrs), luggage arrived about 1.5 hrs after landing. Still, no chance of midday sun at Heathrow (and lots of places to buy beer) !!

regarding Preveza airport 15 years ago 1990 (if math is right) was and still is a military airport with a NATO detachment where the national civil aviation administration was a tenant. For that reason the civil infrastracture was bad as you say. I served in a similar airport / AB as recently as 1999 and the bagage were collected from the baggage carts there was no conveyor belt for incoming baggage. This has changed since late 1999.
Obviously the military logic if it exists goes that the most obvious security the better thus armed guards - bored to death with that duty- and obviously no one thought about a small shop to sell drinks....

Corfou - Kerkyra has improved a lot over the last year...

My vote goes to Venizelos Athens airport far too expencive and Brussels at least during my last spell there where I had to take 6 flights of stairs to go from the aircraft to baggage claim..

Geneva in the 80's
Always delayed, passengers camped all over the floor, overcrowded bar, food unobtainable and awful if there was anything left. No worthwhile information and long lines at desks just to ask, "Do you know what is happening to our plane?"

Once our kids counted a hundred and forty Kassborer busses lined up waiting, all with their engines running. (Had to keep them busy, the kids that is.)

Twice in three years we just gave up and went into town to eat. Unexpected bonus, we found a restaurant upstairs somewhere that was terrific, and reasonable by Swiss standards. Turned out it was justly famous.

And what, pray, is wrong with my dearly loved local airport? Where else can you experience sitting in a underground pit whilst waiting to take your place in the unreserved seating scrum that will preceed boarding?

Actually, as a bus stop it isn't really that bad now they've spent some money on it. No, if you want to see a really crap airport, jump on a flight to Beauvais. :ugh: You can get there from Prestwick by the way...

Goa in 2000. Toilets were just horrible with brown stuff (leave it to your imagination) on the walls, airconditioning consisted of a fan, and the shop had 600 Benson & Hedges and some strange looking Barbie Dolls that must have been ripoffs!

Hot no drinks and a food seller that looked so unhygenic that it made the toilets look clean!

As much as I enjoy going to the United States, any trip going into JFK or MIA is to be avoided if at all possible. The 'endurance test' that is Passport Control and Immigration is something I wouldn't wish on anybody. The only thing missing is somebody in a uniform wielding a cattle prod :*

Yeah, of all the airports I have ever passed through MIA takes the biscuit. It never used to be like that.
I the past, during six hour transit stops, I used to go through immigration, leave my hand luggage in storage and head down to Bayshore for some lunch.

Now even on transit stops, it can take up to 4 hours to get through immigration and passport control. Like a fellow pasenger said on my last trip.
"If this is how they treat pax from countries that theoretically support them in their ambitions, how the hell do they treat pax from those that don't."

On my return journey, I requested wheelchair assist for my wife and we were fast-tracked through the system. I remain entirely unashamed of my actions.

Oh yeah, and the catering facilities were utterly crap !! :{

Check-in at Vancouver was an absolute joke when I was there in 2001...maybe it has improved since. Let's hope so. There was just one queue for every flight leaving that afternoon.

BCN El Prat - how appropriate.
Takes half an hour to walk from the plane to baggage collection, then another schlep back across the airport to the train station. Travelators in evidence, but not one of them working. :\
Wonderful city, horrible airport.
If pax need a reason to OLCI, then a trip through YVR should address that concern. Even the BA FBD can be pokey :hmm:

Re: Worst airport you have ever been through (as PAX)

I travel for work, so I've seen a few airports in my time.

MIA is pretty much crap. Hands down, 'nuff said.

DTW in the '90s. NWA put too many flights into that old terminal, and it was shoulder to shoulder in there with no room to breathe. Nowadays, the old terminal is still horrible, but with fewer people.

LAX is also garbage. Especially when transferring from Int'l to domestic or vice-versa.

My home airport, RSW, just opened a new terminal that is pretty nice. The old one, only 20 years old or so, was so overburdened that it needed replacing. Security lines could go on for an hour or two during season.

Along that line then, FAT and SDF were horrible in terms of security wait times.

And I'm discounting a lot of the smaller town airports that are just shacks with doors to the ramp.

HEATHROW TERMINAL 3 IS THE WORST!!!

No matter if your carcass and baggage are checked through from your originating airport - when passing through LHR from European flights to International flights, you still have to wander through the endless innards of that yecchy terminal AND stand in line for ages to get your new boarding card. That building is totally depressing with its low ceilings, dark colors and non-existing aircondition.

Heavens forbid, but my pitiful (native) location on this earth seem to command that I go via LHR whenever trying to get to the outside world! Terminal 2 is absolutely delicious compared to 3!

Aaarghh!!! :( :( :(

Heathrow Terminals 1 to 4, so I just hope that Terminal 5 will be a bit better. By the way, I thought that Terminal 4 was reasonably new, so how come it looks and operates as if it was built in the 6os to cope with no more than 500 passengers a day?

Re: Worst airport you have ever been through (as PAX)

Heathrow is awful, home of the catatonic "floor cleaner", supported at silent prayer by his broom.

Toronto has its qualities. A few years ago a crowd of travellers set off on the trek from Air Canada domestic arrivals at Terminal 2 to Air Canada transatlantic for Prestwick at Terminal 3, or it may even have been for Heathrow. I do not know how far it is, but the walk took about 30 minutes along endless corridors, so it must be well over a mile. Many of my fellow travellers were from Glasgow, to judge by the accents, and the march was leavened by West Coast wit. As we went through yet another double door to meet yet another corridor, a voice from behind, Maw addressing one Wullie, whom we all had come to know as Paw of a large straggling family group: "Haw Wullie! Mebbe rur a tunnel tae Prestwick".
