World’s only Antonov AN-225 Mriya Destroyed

What a shame if this is true.

War is pointless. God help Ukraine.

FR24 indicates that UR-82060 has been on the ground in GML since February 5.

Dmitry Antonov says the aircraft is intact – for the moment anyway.

There's a Facebook post:

The question that has to be asked is, if the AN-225 was/is airworthy, why the H didn't they reposition it several weeks ago out of the build-up zone to keep it safe for future work ?

I wouldn't be surprised if the invading forces had been briefed about the strategic importance of the aircraft and the need to avoid damaging it.

After all, if Putin's plans work out, he will then be the proud (if illegal) owner of a uniquely useful aircraft, albeit one that will probably be no longer welcome anywhere outside Russia.

Probably even more important is the symbolic value of the aircraft, as an example of Soviet achievement.

One thing that is becoming very apparent regarding this tragic turn of events, is that Joe Public cannot rely on media in any form (Mainstream/Social) for accurate information.

Has Joe Public ever been able to rely on “official” news

Am I alone in thinking that if the usurping of Mriya by Russia is inevitable then, however tragic, euthanasia at the hand of its own stable might be preferable?

That is so true. I have given up on all the rolling news channels now, and try to cross check as much as I can with other sources, but never social media platforms.

Maybe try traditional, well established media with some trackable reputation from different countries instead of "free" websites that get paid by clicks?

Due to the fighting at Gostomel airport, unfortunately it's farewell to the An-225, of which there was only one in the world

It was a key global asset in moving emergency humanitarian supplies, along with time critical cargo that couldn't be carried by any other plane. Mryia was one magnificent beast. Adieu

Damn

edit to add: Ukrainian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dmytro Kuleba, has confirmed that AN-225 "Myriya" was destroyed
