TOKYO, July 14 (Reuters) - A coronavirus cluster at a Japanese hotel where dozens of Brazilian Olympic team members are staying has raised new concern about infections at what the world's top Olympics official promised on Wednesday would be "historic" Games.

Just over a week before the opening ceremony, new cases linked to the Games and spiking infections in the host city highlight the risks of staging the world's biggest sports event during a pandemic even without spectators in sports venues.

Seven staff at the hotel in Hamamatsu city, southwest of Tokyo, had tested positive for the coronavirus, a city official said…..a 31-strong Brazilian Olympic delegation, which includes judo athletes, are in a "bubble" in the hotel and separated from other guests and have not been infected.

The host city Tokyo, where a state of emergency has been imposed until after the Games end on Aug. 8, also recorded 1,149 new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday, the most in nearly six months.

Highly contagious virus variants have fuelled the latest wave of infections, and failure to vaccinate people faster has left the population vulnerable.

Medical experts are worried that Olympic "bubbles", imposed by Tokyo 2020 Olympic officials in an effort to keep out COVID-19, might not be completely tight as movement of staff servicing the Games can create opportunities for infection…..

Now I've been a harsh critic of the traffic light list for travel. UK athletes will be exempt from quarantine on their return because of their job. They will be mixing from everyone all over the world and with this increasing risk. The Beta variant (I believe?) is currently dominant in Brazil which seemingly has significant vaccine resistance. For me, anyone in Tokyo for the Games should be subject to red list restrictions upon return. This would be far more justified than 80% of the amber list at present.

I hope for the hosts and for the athletes and competitors that further outbreaks are kept in check and that, for the most part as is normal, the games are successful. The Japanese are on a hiding to nothing due to a situation beyond their control. Common sense would have cancelled long before now, commercial and political reality means the show must go on. Good luck to all!

.

I suspect he's right about that, although I think that COVID will ensure the it will be "historic", but not for the reason he means!

I feel sorry for the 6 Polish swimmers who flew in, then were told to go home as they exceeded the team number limit.

Norway fined for wearing shorts and not bikini bottoms, Black athletes not able to compete originally due to the skull caps they wear to cover their hair…. Pathetic in the extreme, I thought the world had moved on from such things.

Olympics official refuses to rule out last-minute cancellation

The chief executive of the Tokyo 2020 organising committee did not rule out a last-minute cancellation of the Olympics as more athletes tested positive for Covid-19 and sponsors ditched plans to attend Friday’s opening ceremony.

Toshiro Muto said that organisers would continue to monitor the pandemic and declined to say that cancellation was not a possibility. “We can’t predict what will happen with the number of coronavirus cases,” he said. “So we will continue discussions if there is a spike in cases.”

He added: “At this point, the coronavirus cases may rise or fall, so we will think about what we should do when the situation arises.”….

A growing list of dignitaries, including Empress Masako and more of Japan’s most senior business leaders, have announced that they will not attend the opening ceremony. But a gathering of Japanese and Olympic leaders today expressed determination to press on with the Games, despite the worsening pandemic and continuing public opposition.

“We’re determined to realise safe and secure Games by thoroughly taking measures, with priority on protecting the lives and health of Japanese citizens,” Japan’s prime minister, Yoshihide Suga, told a gathering in Tokyo of the International Olympic Committee (IOC)…..

Another athlete tested positive for coronavirus in the Olympic village in central Tokyo, as well as eight other people working on the Games, bringing the total number of Olympics-related infections to 67.

For the first time the newly confirmed cases included one of the Olympic volunteers, who represent a potential conduit for the virus between the Olympic “bubble” of confined athletes and officials and the Japanese population at large…..

There have been more cancellations for the opening ceremony, after one of the Games’ biggest sponsors, the carmaker Toyota, said that it would not send its executives to events, and that it would cancel Olympic advertising in Japan.

Although Emperor Naruhito will fulfil the ceremonial role of declaring the Olympics open, he will not be accompanied by his wife, Masako.

Officially, this is in line with a policy to reduce the numbers of people at the event. But last month Naruhito used a senior courtier to express anxiety about the potential of the Olympics to spread the virus.

“He is concerned that while there are voices of anxiety among the public, the holding of the Olympics and Paralympics . . . may lead to a rise in infections,” his grand steward, Yasuhiko Nishimura, said.

Another top tier Olympic sponsor, Panasonic, as well as the Japanese companies Fujitsu and NEC, also said they would avoid the opening ceremony……

Political correctness gone mad:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-57924885

This was 23 years ago, that is a quarter of a lifetime!! And the guy was / is also a comedian. I imagine the schoolboy joke about football and minefields in a PoW camp that did the rounds when I was at school, had it been recorded and reproduced and trace back to me, would render me unemployable too!! Clearly repeating it in public today would be foolhardy, and as a rather more mature person, I would never dream of doing so.

I am a bit surprised that we haven't heard anything from the BLM people applauding UNESCOs removal of Liverpool from its 'cultural heritage cities' list, in view of Liverpool's historic connections with the slave trade..

Who on earth would have the time or notion to go back almost a quarter of a century into someone's private or work life to dig out (whatever) that would be seen in today's environment as unacceptable ? It beggars belief, but it seems to be the way of things, especially comments/actions made by people on social media years before when they were in many cases children, then being dragged out by keyboard warriors to achieve some kind of retribution, but to whom ???

Maybe this Japanese chap is a total rotter and is the same today as he was then, but as mentioned age will have undoubtedly changed his sensibilities and sensitivities and he's likely of a different opinion.

I understand that some Aussie city, Melbourne, Brisbane was awarded the summer games some time way into the future (at my age)?
Good luck!

I have to admit, I had a little smile when I heard the USA Women's Soccer Team had been upset by Sweden in the opener.
I felt the primadonna actions of the USA team when they won the world championship a couple years back personified the stereotype 'Ugly American'.

Another one, more or less forced to resign after he had accusations of bullying made against him from when he was at School!

How pathetic can you get. He was born in January 69, so is in his 50’s!

He should have told them in that case, as I hold copywriter on any music written, they couldn’t use it.

Football not soccer.
World Cup not World Championship.

You need to remember "Football" has a totally different meaning on this side of the pond.
You don't consider the World Cup a championship?

Even more so in the Antipodes: football is AFL down south, NRL or Union on the eastern seaboard and Union in the Shaky Isles.

Soccer is not THE football DownUnder
