Best World War II movie?

Any country, any language, and any time frame from 1939 to the present.

Das Boot of course is in the running, but I hedge a deep respect for The Way To The Stars...one of Britain's finest films.

Even with those, The Cruel Sea remains my favourite. The book was outstanding and the film did it great credit.

Others?

Edit: Documentaries are indeed welcome.

The Cruel Sea is also my favourite. One of the very few instances where a movie holds its own against a great book.

If documentary movies about WWII are permitted in your survey, I would say "Angels of War" (Australian made, 1982). Not just one of the best documentaries about war but one of the best documentaries ever made (IMO).

I started a thread on this a few years back:
Best World War II Movies

Technically a mini-series, not a movie, but Band of Brothers is simply fantastic.

The Dambusters
A Bridge Too Far
The Hill
Downfall

Just for starters!

Corvette K225 (1943) (AKA The Nelson Touch) is pretty good for a wartime produced film,Randolph Scott plays the Captain of a Canadian Corvette (Lt Cdr RCNR - with a southern accent of course) ,loads of familiar faces including a young Robert Mitchum.
We have it on disc and it is visually of good quality.
Quite an enjoyable film - we would rate it as 7 or 8 out of 10.

Saving Private Ryan. Best parts, the beach landing, and the fighting at the end, finished by 2 mustangs.
The Cruel Sea

I've recently rewatched The Pacific. Excellent follow-on from Band of Brothers.

Three possibilities for different reasons. The Longest Day. Band of Brothers. Battle of Britain.

Kelly’s Heroes is a personal (lighter) favourite.

Band of brothers is as good as it gets

THE very best... "La vache et le Prisonnier", in English "The Cow and I". Watch with a tight fitting antiG suit, I had rib cage pains for days after watching it as a kid!.

An antidote for these last few days stressfull times.
Quote from Wiko -" The film has become a national favourite, being shown often on television. Analysing its enduring popularity, a critic in 2017 wrote that the character created by Fernandel embodies: .. the typical Frenchman, in his stubbornness, resourcefulness and humanity. "

sorry to disagree, but this was based on just one witness report by a secretary in the bunker. So the historical

Actually Downfall's screenwriters developed the script from 6 different sources, historian's books, Albert Speer's memoirs along with Traudl Junge's biography.

Anyway, does a war movie have to be historically accurate to be considered good? Saving Private Ryan, Casablanca, The Thin Red Line, Das Boot (Apocalypse Now, Platoon for some non WW2 ones) were all mostly or totally fictional but good movies.

A Bridge Too Far. The best

of the modern ones, Saving Private Ryan was good.

If you want something about flying, I did rather like Dambusters.
